New Game Plus: That One Perfect Shot – Project Zero #1

Do you beat games? I do.

Speaking to a lot of game-playing friends in person and online, it transpired that relatively few people I know seem to start a game and see it through to completion in the same way as I do — either playing a bit and then endlessly starting again to try different character builds or starting conditions, or simply hopping from new game to new game as they’re released without ever really getting anywhere in any of them.

One of the things you miss out on if you don’t beat games is the fact that many of them have plenty more stuff to do after you see the credits roll for the first time. So, well, I figured given that my YouTube channel is settling into a nice rhythm with its Atari A to Z, Warriors Wednesday and Sunday Driving videos… why don’t we take the time to explore that aspect of gaming specifically?

Warriors Wednesday: The Solid Whack You Can Deliver with Wood – Warriors Orochi #12

Things are getting noticeably more difficult as we approach the conclusion of the Samurai campaign in Warriors Orochi.

Today’s mission sees our intrepid heroes facing off against a selection of powerful foes, including “wild man” Keiji Maeda, who threatens to break Xiao Qiao in half (“but who will put me back together again?!”). But help is at hand in the form of “God of War” Kenshin Uesugi and his longstanding rival, Shingen Takeda’s formidable moustache. And the warrior attached to it, I guess.

How do things go? Hmm… take a look.

Sunday Driving: More Faster Than I Was – Auto Modellista #3

AUTOOOOO MODELIIIIISTAAAAA!

Yes, it’s that time when we strap in and go for a bit of a drive, once again in Capcom’s beautiful 2002 “Gran Turismo lite” affair, Auto Modellista.

Today we take on some tougher challenges, and either start to hit the limits of what my dear little Yaris has to offer… or perhaps my own skill ceiling. Hit the jump to see what happened.

Atari ST A to Z: F-15 Strike Eagle

Attempts to realistically simulate things it would be near-impossible for the average person to experience have been around for a long time… even when the technology wasn’t quite up to the job.

Back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, one of the most prolific creators of simulations — with a particular (though not exclusive) focus on military jet fighter simulators — was MicroProse, erstwhile home of Sid “Civilization” Meier. As time went on, these games got more and more satisfyingly complex and true to life… but the genre had to start somewhere!

F-15 Strike Eagle was first released in 1984 for various 8-bit computers and ported to a variety of other platforms (including the Atari ST) over the course of the next three years. It’s a fairly “arcadey” take on the jet fighter sim, but it remains enjoyable to this day… even if its core tech looks severely dated even compared to MicroProse’s own titles from just a year or two later!

Warriors Wednesday: Mistakes Were Made – Warriors Orochi #11

Ahhh… I knew it wouldn’t last.

After last week’s joyful celebrations of clearing a mission first time… today we more than make up for that good performance with a series of unfortunate and crushing defeats.

But still, as long as we learn from our mistakes, it’s okay to mess up once or twice, right…?

Warriors Wednesday: First-Time Clear – Warriors Orochi #10

I did it! For the first time in quite a while… I cleared a Warriors Orochi battle without messing it up even once.

This is surely cause for celebration… at least partly because it almost certainly won’t happen again, as the challenge factor continues to ramp up with each new mission.

Hit the jump for the latest video and admire my… skills?

Sunday Driving: Finale? – Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed #7

We’ve been making good headway through Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed… but today we clear the game!

Or do we…? This is a Sega game in the classic console mould, after all, so it only stands to reason that seeing the end credits isn’t necessarily the end of the experience…

Regardless, today we see the “ending” of the game… and from there we’ll have to decide what to do next!

Atari ST A to Z: Beyond the Ice Palace

I never played this game back in the day, but it was one of those titles you saw all over the place in the early days of the ST.

Throughout the ST’s lifespan, it played host to a variety of different bundle packages, many of which were extremely generous in terms of the number of games and applications they included. Beyond the Ice Palace was a regular inclusion in such bundles, and as such became reasonably well-known.

Loosely inspired by action platformers such as Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins, Beyond the Ice Palace sees your green-booted, gender-ambiguous hero(ine?) battling their way through hordes of enemies and admiring how the ST’s lack of sound channels meant that a single sound effect could mess up an entire musical composition.

Warriors Wednesday: Most Definitely Sorcery Bullshit – Warriors Orochi #8

It’s once again time for the Samurai Warriors and friends to continue their adventure through the otherworldly realm of Orochi.

The difficulty level is starting to ramp up noticeably now — today’s mission takes a few attempts to get just right, but we get there in the end!

We’re well past the halfway point of the Samurai Warriors scenario now… where will things end up next?

Sunday Driving: Pudding?! You Were Always So Quirky, Brian – Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed #6

It’s time for another Sunday Driving session as we continue our playthrough of Sega and Sumo Digital’s wonderful Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

We’re making good progress through the World Tour mode — it should only be another episode or two before we clear all the available events on the normal difficulty we’ve been playing them all on so far.

But what then? Hmm, we’ll have to wait and see, won’t we… Hit the jump for today’s video in the meantime!
