Warriors Wednesday: Honour, Hojo and Halberds – Warriors Orochi #35

In today’s Warriors Orochi mission, it’s up to the Shu people to save the Hojo clan before they defect to Orochi’s forces! Can they pull it off and obtain some valuable new allies?

Zhao Yun, Yue Ying and Ginchiyo Tachibana certainly think so, but they have a formidable challenge ahead of them. Orochi may not look like the most charismatic evil snake dude out there, but he certainly seems to have a fairly reliable means of… convincing people to rally under his banner.

Only one thing for it! Kick the snot out of everyone until we seem like the more appealing option! Let’s do it!

Warriors Wednesday: Spirits of Sanada – Warriors Orochi #34

Oh no! Ghosts! They ruin everything. Particularly when they’re not actually there.

This is the painful lesson that Yukimura Sanada has to learn in today’s Warriors Orochi mission. Fortunately, Zhao Yun, Yue Ying and Ginchiyo Tachibana are right there ready and waiting to educate him with various pointy implements.

Hit the jump to see how the Shu gang’s attempts to prove their corporeal nature went…

Warriors Wednesday: Gender Roles – Warriors Orochi #33

In today’s Warriors Wednesday, Ginchiyo Tachibana struts her stuff and proves exactly why she is known as the Goddess of Lightning!

Fighting alongside Xingcai and Zhao Yun in the first side mission of the Shu campaign, Tachibana quickly proves herself to be a formidable warrior who is more than happy to put all the men on the battlefield well and truly in their place. One in particular

Hit the jump to see how today’s battle went!

Sunday Shooting: Eschatos

After beating Split/Second, I thought it might be nice to take a little break from arcade racers and explore another of my passions: shoot ’em ups.

And so we have Sunday Shooting, a new series in which I’ll do an incompetent playthrough of a different shoot ’em up each week, perhaps revisiting some later if my skills improve down the line.

We’re kicking off with a longstanding favourite of mine, and one which you can get on both Xbox 360 and PC. It’s Eschatos!

Shmup Essentials: Exzeal

Triangle Service is not exactly what you’d call a household name in the shoot ’em up sector, but over the years they’ve been quietly beavering away to produce some enjoyable, addictive games.

Probably their most well-known output is their Zeal series, which consists of XIIZeal (actually a port of a PS2-era shoot ’em up called XII Stag), ΔZeal (pronounced “Deltazeal”, not “Trianglezeal”, as I referred to it for a long time), Trizeal and Exzeal — but you may also have stumbled across their more unusual titles such as Shmups Skills Test and Minus Zero at some point in the past.

Today we’re going to take a look at Exzeal, released for Xbox 360 as part of the Shooting Love. 200X compilation (which, pro-tip, is not region-free in its physical incarnation, unlike many other Xbox 360 shmups — including its stablemate Shooting Love. 10-shuunen) and subsequently for PC via Steam.

Warriors Wednesday: One Foxy Lady – Warriors Orochi #32

The Shu campaign of Warriors Orochi is now well underway as Zhao Yun kicks off his efforts to find his lost master Liu Bei.

Well, I say that; I kicked him out of the party in favour of trying out newcomer Ginchiyo Tachibana, who I unlocked at the end of last week’s mission; turns out she’s rather fun, so sorry Zhao Yun, but you’re on the bench for now.

Hit the jump to see today’s mission… featuring a guest appearance from the biggest wannabe pimp in Sengoku-era Japan.

Racer Essentials: Split/Second

With my Sunday Driving playthrough of Black Rock Studio’s excellent Split/Second now at an end, it’s time to take a final, summative look back at one of my favourite racers of all time.

Split/Second, like its contemporary and rival Blur, was a victim of a combination of factors: poor marketing, arrogant publishers and an overall gaming landscape that was somewhat in flux. As such, while those who took a chance on it back in the day tend to look back on it rather fondly now, it doesn’t get nearly the recognition it deserves.

Let’s change all that, shall we?

Sunday Driving: Boneyard Rush – Split/Second #10

We’re closing in on the end of Split/Second now; only a few more episodes to go!

Today’s episode, Boneyard Rush, takes us out of the city and into a few areas rather devoid of life… the desert, the canyon, the industrial zone. Bring on the Bridge of Death!

Hit the jump to see how things went today… and to admire a stupid gag that took me probably more time and effort than it really deserved.

Sunday Driving: Scorching Rubber – Split/Second #9

Well over the halfway point through Split/Second now, and we’re starting to unlock some of the top-notch cars.

There are still some significant challenges ahead of us, but today’s installment goes strangely smoothly… perhaps it’s down to the amount of gas I fill myself with before getting underway properly.

Whatever the reason, hit the jump to see how things went… and beware of the flatulence.

Warriors Wednesday: Learn Through Pain – Warriors Orochi #28

And oh, oh, I did. I really did learn through pain. Intense, burning, repeated pain.

We have a long journey ahead of us, dear friends, but it’s a worthwhile one. In front of us stands the seemingly undefeatable Tadakatsu Honda, and beyond? The path to Orochi.

When I say “seemingly undefeatable”, I… well, you’ll see. Hit the jump to see how badly things went.
