The Demon Crystal: House Party

It’s always interesting to look back at anything that claims to be a “pioneer” of something — especially when the title in question isn’t as well-known as some of its peers.

That’s why I was intrigued to take a look at The Demon Crystal, a game that originally released for a variety of Japanese home computers back in the mid-’80s, and which more recently had an enhanced port to Windows PCs and Nintendo Switch.

Original creator YMCAT and new publisher Regista claim that The Demon Crystal was a pioneer of the action RPG genre, although from a casual glance you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a straightforward arcade game. What does this peculiar adventure have to offer?

Warriors Wednesday: Who’s That Girl – Warriors All-Stars #4

You know sometimes how you see someone and you know that you know them, but you just can’t remember their name? Yeah, that.

How could I forget dear old Honoka, though? She’s become quite a high-profile mascot for the Dead or Alive series in various crossover collaborations — besides Warriors All-Stars she also had a guest appearance in Senran Kagura — but her name just fell right on out of my head for some reason.

Oh well. At least I remember her name once she’s said it a few times… and once she’s joined Arnice’s brigade of brave warriors!

Warriors Wednesday: Grand Finale – Warriors Orochi #60

We made it, everyone! After 60 weekly(ish) episodes, we finally made it all the way through Warriors Orochi from start to finish.

The funny thing is that there’s still actually a bunch more of this game I could continue to play if I wanted to, and I might just do that off-camera. There are harder difficulties to challenge, hidden items to discover, weapons to collect and even more characters to unlock.

But for now, this particular “season” of Warriors Wednesday is over. Next week, we’ll be kicking off a look at something a little different: Warriors All-Stars, which brings together characters from a variety of different Koei Tecmo games to save a fantasy world from destruction. Please look forward to it.

And if you’ve watched any or all of this series… a sincere thank you! I hope you enjoyed it. But our job here is far from over!

Glutton for punishment? Watch the whole thing here and admire my gradual progression of confidence in both making videos and editing them!

Warriors Wednesday: Just a Quickie – Warriors Orochi #58

It’s nice when things go your way for once, isn’t it?

In the first instance of that happening for quite some time in this Warriors Orochi playthrough, Cao Pi, Nene and Xiahou Dun all find it remarkably straightforward to struggle their way through Nan Zhong and deal another significant blow to Orochi’s forces.

It’s nice when you get a clear, quick, simple, decisive victory like this, as it’s good motivation to keep going! And there’s not long to go until we are well and truly done, once and for all! We’re coming for you, Orochi… again!

Atari A to Z: Gateway to Apshai

Role-playing games have been part of home computing — and indeed mainframe computing — pretty much from the very beginning.

The fact that there’s considerable crossover between “nerds who like computers” and “nerds who enjoy playing Dungeons & Dragons” certainly helps, of course. But adapting a tabletop, social experience for solo home computer play carries its own challenges… and its own possibilities.

Gateway to Apshai is what happens when you blend the conventions of arcade games with those of tabletop roleplaying. And the result is an incredibly addictive, compelling game that I still love, love, love playing today.

Warriors Wednesday: Daddy Dearest – Warriors Orochi #57

Cao Cao, father of Cao Pi and Warriors series fixture, has been conspicuously absent for much of Warriors Orochi.

Okay, we’ve sort of seen him a few times when Da Ji has been up to her illusory tricks at various junctures, but the man himself has been nowhere to be seen… and strongly implied to have died before the events of the game even got underway.

You can’t keep a good Cao down, however, as Cao Pi and friends discover while attempting to take Mount Tennou for themselves as their campaign against Orochi continues to escalate.

Warriors Wednesday: Filthy Garbage – Warriors Orochi #56

Following his long-expected rebellion against his Crazy Snake Guy overlord, Cao Pi sets out to rescue his wife Zhen Ji from servitude to the Big O.

We’re getting very close to the absolutely, positively, definitely end of Warriors Orochi now! There are just a few more episodes in the Wei campaign left to go, and then we’re done.

Of course, once you’ve played through all the stories once, there’s still a lot to do, including collecting weapons and unique items, levelling up all the characters, challenging harder difficulties… I think this game will keep me busy for quite some time, even long after this “season” of Warriors Wednesday ends!

Warriors Wednesday: Watch Me Whip, Watch Me Nene – Warriors Orochi #55

By popular request, I present Nene! All right, one person asked if I could unlock Nene and play as her for a bit, but on a channel as small as mine that counts as “by popular request”.

Turns out the suggestion was a good one, mind, as Nene is a ton of fun to play, and manages to make herself useful to Cao Pi’s cause even though she’s considerably lower level than everyone else. But I shouldn’t be surprised really; ninja girls are the best girls, after all.

Having successfully captured Da Ji in a previous sortie, Cao Pi declares Wei’s independence from Orochi and continues growing his army in preparation for the final assault. Today he sets his sights on Nagamasa Azai, who is hanging out in the Chen Cang area… so this seems like as good an opportunity as any to throw Nene in at the deep end and see what she’s made of!

Warriors Wednesday: Naughty Boys – Warriors Orochi #53

The time has finally come for Cao Pi to launch his rebellion against Da Ji and Orochi’s forces!

In today’s mission, we take Xiahou Dun out for a bit of a spin. This is a character that I know quite a few people who like a lot (at least partially for the “badass with eyepatch” thing he’s got going on), but I don’t have a ton of experience with him. Turns out he’s pretty fun!

Not many more missions to go now, and then we can finally leave Warriors Orochi behind… unless I decide to try and unlock all the characters, get all the personal items, get the best possible weapons and complete everything on Chaos difficulty, that is… mwehehehehe!

Warriors Wednesday: It’s A Trap… Again – Warriors Orochi #52

You can count on several things in a Warriors game: firstly, that pursuing Lu Bu is usually a bad idea; secondly, that the commander is struggling and that you should assist at once; and thirdly, that “it” is usually a trap.

It’s a trope at this point; if a particular encounter in a Warriors battle feels mysteriously easy, or there don’t seem to be very many enemies around on a suspiciously large map, you can guarantee that something bad is going to happen to your forces at some point. It’s just a matter of when…

And, of course, that’s exactly what happens today, as Cao Pi and friends attempt to seize a strategically advantageous garrison…
