The MoeGamer Podcast: Episode 26 – Vanishing Point

Humblest greetings to you, Internet denizen, and a hearty welcome to another episode of The MoeGamer Podcast, featuring my good self and a spicy pepper-chomping Mr Chris Caskie of MrGilderPixels.

Three, two, one… go! Today’s show kicks off with what we initially assumed to be a fairly “moribund” collection of news, but we somehow managed to find a good 45 minutes’ worth of stuff to talk about — yes, including Doom and the controversial direction the new Sakura Wars’ game mechanics have taken.

We follow that with a slightly different “what we’ve been playing” segment; while we both have some games to talk about — 2D rules the roost this week! — I also take a bit of time to show some appreciation for Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose, Paul Gannon, Octav1us, Larry Bundy Jr and everyone else involved with the excellent Digitiser Live show I attended last weekend. It really was a very special event, so I wanted to make sure I talked about it a bit.

And then… then we move on to our main topic of the day: horizon-chasing “vanishing point” arcade racers. This is a genre I love and Chris doesn’t really get, so it makes for an interesting discussion. We talk about a whole bunch of games ranging from the revolutionary (Monaco GPto the genre-defining (OutRunvia the obscure (The Great American Cross-Country Road Race) and the chaotic (Chase H.Q.)

Turns out this is an incredibly diverse genre, even before you get into the “true 3D” games with Virtua Racing and beyond. So those will be a tale told another day!

Enjoy the episode; we certainly did!
