Around the Network

Hello everyone! I’d say it’s been nice to relax for a weekend after last week’s Digitiser Live funtimes, but I’ve been recording and editing a new episode of The MoeGamer Podcast, so I’ve been busy this weekend too!

It should be a good episode, and I hope you like it. Chris and I sit down to talk about “vanishing point” racers — a subject close to my heart and not so close to Chris’ heart, so it makes for an interesting discussion, for sure.

In the meantime, why don’t we take a moment to check out what you might have missed in the last week or so?

MoeGamer

Why Collect? – A recent video by Billy of The Game Chasers inspired me to contemplate my collection and consider why I enjoy collecting all these plastic boxes with discs and cartridges in them.

Crawlco Block Knockers: A Game That Indeed Contains Both Blocks and Knockers – Don’t pass up on this little indie gem when it releases on Steam in early August! If you enjoy any combination of Pengo, Gals Panic, Gonta the Diver and vaporwave music, you’ll get a big kick out of this.

Warriors Wednesday: Heavy Weapon – Cao Pi, Xu Zhu and Xu Huang hit the jungle and attempt to convince the flamboyant Zhang He that battling alongside the snake god Orochi is the right thing to do. Maybe. Or maybe Cao Pi is just up to something…

Waifu Wednesday: The Hundred Honeys Project Neo – It’s been a while because I knew I needed to port all the Hundred Honeys into the new Studio Neo software, and I knew that was going to take a fair amount of time. I did it, though, and here we have the latest assemblage of Honey Select Unlimited creations all in one place!

Sunshine Blogger Award – Community time! Megan of A Geeky Gal was kind enough to nominate me for this award and present me with some interesting questions, so here’s my response.

The Expression: Amrilato – Nova Vivo de Rin – The Cover Game feature on The Expression: Amrilato continues with an overall look at the narrative and the personal journey that protagonist Rin finds herself going on in this strange new world.

Final Fantasy Marathon: TPKO #1 – Well, we had to encounter a bit of resistance sooner of later, didn’t we…? Score one to the Marsh Cave.

Doom: Now Available on The Go. Kind Of. – Doom is out on Switch! Hooray! You might want to read this first, though. (Including the update from yesterday.)

Back on track this week! This time around we’ve got two interestingly different takes on the Galaxians formula, plus an early racing game from Atari.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting chaotic “old men (and Octav1us Kitten) attempt to talk about games, usually fail” collective Digitiser 2000, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, the wonderfully supportive Normal Happenings, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage and fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of recent YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

As for the WordPress community this week? Let’s delve into my Likes for the last seven days and see what treasures we come back with!

Miru Tights (Episode 1) – School Commute Tights (Ecchi Hunter) – I’d been meaning to check out the short-form gratuitous fetish anime Miru Tights for ages, and this post by Yomu over at Ecchi Hunter convinced me to finally do so. It’s quite something… and not just if you like tights.

That forbidden word: “F-U-N” (Kimimi the Game-Eating She-Monster) – Kimimi posts an excellent article about the wonderfully strange Bishi Bashi Special, and how sometimes games don’t need to really “say” anything beyond “I hope you have a good time”.

10 Best Anime OPs Summer 2019 (Anime QandA) – There’s some real bangers among the opening songs for the anime airing this season, so Cactus Matt has been kind enough to round up  some of the best for us.

Leth’s Journey Through 40 Terrible Anime Series #2 – Akikan! (Lethargic Ramblings) – Leth bravely invited people to suggest their least favourite anime to him so he can see if he also hates them, or if he can find any redeeming features among them. This week, he’s checking out Akikan from 2009: an early example of moe anthropomorphism where the girls are, err, drinks cans.

Underrated Ladies! (Livid Lightning) – LightningEllen takes some time to highlight some of her favourite underappreciated female characters from throughout gaming. You can probably guess at least one of them.

Our Patreon Celebrates 2 Years – 6 Things I Learned Launching and Maintaining a Crowdfunding Campaign (The Well-Red Mage) – Red takes a moment to contemplate how his Patreon campaign has gone over the course of the last year. You might find a few helpful tips for yourself among these observations.

And that’ll probably do for now because I should go to bed. Watch out for The MoeGamer Podcast at some point tomorrow, and as always, thank you so much for your support. Love yooooou!

Thanks for reading; I hope you enjoyed this article. I’ve been writing about games in one form or another since the days of the old Atari computers, with work published in Page 6/New Atari User, PC Zone, the UK Official Nintendo Magazine, GamePro, IGN, USgamer, Glixel and more over the years, and I love what I do.

  1. Thank you for the shout out yet again! I’m glad my rambly review of Akikan was interesting to you!

As for MoeGamer stuff last week, I’ve really been enjoying your Final Fantasy marathon and the latest episode was a good time! Kind of convincing me to go back and give the older titles in the series a shot myself (I’m currently playing VII as you know!)

Looking forward to more great stuff next week 😀
