Around the Network

Good morning everyone! I have a podcast to edit, but I thought I’d get this done before I spend all day editing and end up too exhausted to write anything coherent at 11pm. So here we are!

It’s been a pretty eventful week for world events, huh? And I suspect the chaos isn’t quite over as yet, but at least things are moving along in one way or another. I’d like to remind everyone that you’re all welcome here if you want a break from the barrage of noise that is the rest of the Internet; I’m just here to talk about good ol’ video games, so come hang out and chat about what I’ve been writing about this week!

And on that note, let’s check out exactly what I have been writing about this week; hit the jump to explore what you might have missed.

Galaxian: The Thinking Man’s Fixed Shooter – Like many of the other games in its library, spending some time with Galaxian on the Evercade has given me a new-found appreciation of what it’s really about.

Side Pocket: Kissin’ Cushions – Fancy shooting some pool? While Data East’s Side Pocket may not be the most authentic pool sim out there, it certainly provides some enjoyably arcadey twists.

short;Play: Petal Crash – Do you miss the ’90s? Do you miss the Game Boy Colour? Do you miss standalone, non-freemium puzzle games? Then boy have I got a treat for you.

Waifu Wednesday: Hanna Olses – Meruru’s friend, who sells the spunky young princess bits of dirt and monster parts, is under the spotlight this week.

SpyHunter: Who Needs Stealth? – Sometimes, you’re just in the mood for crazy, explosion-filled, arcade-style action. And 2001’s SpyHunter reboot provides all of those things in spades.

Evercade A to Z: Prehistorik Man – While most people tend to think of the two Interplay Collection cartridges for Evercade as a bit of a weak point in the lineup, there are a few hidden gems among them that make them worth the price of admission. Like this one!

Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland – A Princess’ Work is Never Done – The Atelier MegaFeature continues with a look at how Atelier Meruru hands the core alchemy mechanics, and how these fit in with the overall game structure.

Atari A to Z

This week we’ve got an early game from Tony Crowther (albeit ported to Atari 8-bit by someone else), plus a classic from the Dizzy series, and one of the rarest Atari 2600 games.

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. At the present time, this also includes exclusive patrons-only weekly vlogs and Let’s Plays at the weekends! If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just $1 a month (about 80p) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose’s creative endeavours on the Digitiser YouTube channel, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage, fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, blogger/YouTuber meggsngrits and TangoPunk, the newest zine on the block, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And as always, we conclude with a quick wander around the WordPress Reader to see what the blogging community has been up to this week. As always, feel free to pimp your own stuff in the comments if you think I’ve missed something you’re particularly proud of!

If Horror Movies Reflect Societal Anxieties, What do Horror Anime Say About What Otakus are Afraid of? (I drink and watch anime) – Irina does good headlines — and good posts to go with them — so we can forgive her for being a little late to Halloween with this one!

HyperX Cloud Alpha S Gaming Headset Review (In Third Person) – In the market for a new headset? Jett’s got some thoughts on this shiny black-and-blue thing.

It’s Six Random Characters and a Single Floor Dungeon, That’s the Whole Game (The Well-Red Mage) – The Wandering Mage provides some initial impressions on this rather literally titled take on the roguelike.

Let’s Try This Again: A Re-Introduction (ARCHI-ANIME) – Please welcome back heyitszel after a long hiatus — and go support the new direction of ARCHI-ANIME.

Five Game Challenge 2020: Accepted! (Ace Asunder) – A number of bloggers are taking on a challenge based around the idea of only being able to play five games for the rest of eternity. Check out Solarayo’s take on the situation here.

And that’s yer lot. I’m off to edit the aforementioned podcast, which is going to be a beast to put together, but hopefully worth it! Watch out for it on Monday, all being well — and in the meantime stay safe, take care of yourself and maybe stay off social media for a few days…
