Touhou Project

A series of Japanese shoot ’em ups (and a few fighting games… and a whole host of other things, too) that are widely credited with playing a significant role in popularising the “bullet hell” subgenre. They also demonstrated the fact that what are technically “indie games” can go on to be international transmedia phenomena. And they have frighteningly extensive lore.
