When considering “classics” of the visual novel medium, Kana Little Sister is usually near the top of the list. Offering a challenging story about coming to terms with terminal illness, Kana is an example of an utsuge, or “depression game”, but don’t let that put you off exploring its thought-provoking narrative.

Kana is the very essence of “moe” — a character designed to elicit feelings of affection and even love from the player.
The young Kana is already fragile, but it takes a dangerous event for protagonist Taka to truly understand this.
Much of the story unfolds from this perspective: Kana in her hospital bed, Taka visiting her and dealing with his feelings.
Kana and Taka going to school together; such a scene is a common sight in much of modern anime.
Utsuge
Yumi’s obsession with Taka — a love that is, for the most part, not reciprocated — is an important aspect of the narrative.
The three “Intellectual” endings introduce Taka and Kana’s aunt Sumako, who helps teach them both about coming to terms with death.
