Around the Network

A late one today, as I’ve been busy recording videos for most of the weekend!

I like to try and get stuff done “ahead of time” with regard to video, as it takes time to edit, render and upload, so with a free weekend I thought I’d try and “pre-record” as many Atari A to Z and MoeGamerTV videos as I possibly could. I didn’t quite achieve everything I wanted to, but I did pretty well.

Anyway. That aside, you might have missed all sorts of goodness this week. Let’s check out what that included!

Atari ST A to Z: Vaxine

Next time you get bacteria in your ilium, call me up and I’ll come blast your balls for you.

Vaxine from The Assembly Line is one of the most technically impressive games on the Atari ST, featuring gorgeous and colourful ray-traced graphics, convincing sprite scaling routines and an interesting blend of physics puzzle and first-person shoot ’em up.

Developed as a sequel to the team’s previous game E-Motion, which marketed itself as “the first New Age computer game”, Vaxine is a simple but enjoyable time that shows what Atari’s 16-bit computers were really capable of when in the hands of someone who knew what they were doing.

Atari A to Z Flashback: Black Widow

I don’t like spiders. I do, however, absolutely LOVE Black Widow, a delightful vector-based twin-stick shooter.

In Black Widow, you play a spider trying to defend their web from all manner of incoming creepy crawlies. And, unfortunately, it seems that they are sick and tired of you doing your spidery thing, and as such are more than capable of taking you out with a single, fatal touch.

Fortunately, you aren’t just any spider. You are the Black Widow, a laser-spitting spider of doom, the kind of thing that you really wouldn’t want to find under your toilet seat when you wake up in the middle of the night to go for a dump…

Atari ST A to Z: Shanghai

Any time you undertake a project like this, you have to accept that some elements of it are just going to be less of a “spectator sport” than others.

Such is the case with today’s Atari ST game, the not-much-to-look-at-but-fun-to-play Shanghai by Activision, an adaptation of Mahjong Solitaire that makes use of the ST’s built-in graphical user interface GEM as the foundation of its aesthetic. This was not at all an unusual approach back in the day, and is akin to more modern PC games running on Windows 95 and beyond making use of a windowed interface and standardised Windows controls. Not the most beautiful look, no, but perfectly functional — and a lot more intuitive to those who perhaps don’t play a lot of games.

Compared to more recent adaptations of Mahjong Solitaire, Shanghai is fairly limited, but it nonetheless remains a pleasingly relaxing, Zen sort of experience. Once you figure out how to read the screen properly, that is…

Everyone back to work now? Me too. Booooo.

Still, that means getting back on a normal schedule again, and it also means the beginning of a new year of Cover Game features, kicking off with the Atelier Arland series starting this month. From there… well, there’s a whole bunch of stuff I’m excited about covering in the near future!

There are also developments in the world of Atari A to Z, and I’ll be getting the ball rolling on Videopac Games again this week now that I’m in a good “rhythm” again. But for now, hit the jump to see what you might have missed!

Ten days until Christmas! Are you ready? I am, after a flurry of Amazon shopping earlier.

I’m likely going to be taking a few days off from MoeGamer during the holiday season, so from the week after next onwards (i.e. the week that begins with Christmas) updates may be a little intermittent, but I’ll be back on a normal schedule by the new year at the very latest. And with any luck, if my Christmas plans come to fruition, there may be a very special “Episode X” of The MoeGamer Podcast to enjoy — though no promises in that regard just yet.

Anyway, that’s all in the future. What’s been happening in the immediate past? Hit the jump to see what you might have missed this week.

Hello again, dear reader. Are you ready for Christmas? I’m not. But then it’s only just December, so despite what popular culture and The Shops would have you believe, it’s only just now getting into the Christmas period.

I’ve been working hard to get the Project Zero series done and dusted and I’m pleased and proud to say that it is finally done! This week saw the final installment of the articles about this fascinating and unusual survival horror series, and I’m delighted that I’ve finally taken the time to enjoy it in its entirety — and will be continuing to enjoy its various postgames over the course of the New Game Plus video series.

That now leaves me some free time for the MoeGamer Awards 2018 throughout December — I still want your suggestions, by the way! — as well as the opportunity to get a head start on whatever I’ll be covering next year. Question is… where to begin?

Whew! Another busy week, and I feel like it’s only going to get busier as we get closer and closer to Christmas.

Still, one thing many of us have to look forward to is the impending release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Switch… you just, uh, might want to stay off Twitter for a bit, as those bloody dataminers are at it again. If you want to enjoy some pleasant surprises from the game as actual surprises, consider yourself warned!

Another thing you have to look forward to that dataminers can’t ruin is the continued light and joy my work here and on YouTube undoubtedly brings to your life. So let’s take a moment to recap what you might have missed out on this week!

Another week has passed. I won’t lie, I’m still feeling the lingering mental, emotional and physical effects of the last few weeks’ stress… but things are OK-ish for now.

Probably the most exciting thing that has happened is I bought myself yet another little Chinese box to sit under my TV to go with my (surprisingly excellent for the price) upscaler and HDMI splitter (for recording PS3 and PSTV). This one allows me to listen to the TV audio through headphones, which means when I’m recording videos (or streaming, if I ever do that) I can now actually listen to console game sounds instead of just having to turn the audio right down!

You’re hopefully here because you want to know what you might have missed here on MoeGamer and from my other projects this week, though. So hit the jump and we’ll take a look.

Sunday Driving: If You’re Not in First Place, You’re Not Gonna Win – Auto Modellista #4

Who’d have thought it, eh? It’s amazing the kind of inane stupidity that spills out of one’s mouth while attempting to concentrate on something else.

This week we continue our attempts to master Capcom’s visually arresting arcade racer Auto Modellista, and start to encounter some serious resistance. And, it seems, overcoming that resistance isn’t as simple as just picking the car with the best stats from the list…

Hit the jump to see how things went in this week’s races.
