Sunday Driving: It Keeps Happening – OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast #5

Oh, Flagman. Why do you taunt me so? Why does beating Clarissa in a straight-up race through the easiest courses in the game seem to be such a challenge?

Who knows. And apparently after today’s experimentation, it is not the car that is to blame — though it may well be my driving. It seems that flipping over your extremely expensive sports car on the final corners of the race may well cost you a few valuable seconds as well as a few thousand dollars.

Sunday Driving: Timeless Classics of Video Game Music

OutRun has endured in popularity for so long for a number of reasons.

First and arguably foremost is its sheer “pick up and play” nature. It’s simple to understand, easy to get into and tricky to master — exactly what you want from an arcade game — and this overall feel has continued into its later console incarnations.

Secondly is its soundtrack. Classics like Magical Sound Shower and Splash Wave sound just as good today as they did back when the first OutRun game hit arcades — and Sega very much understands this has always been part of the appeal!

Sunday Driving: Coast 2 Ghost – OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast #3

Let’s go for another drive, shall we? Get ready!

Today’s road trip adventure once again takes us beneath the Sega blue skies into the world of OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast by Sega and Sumo Digital. This is an arcade racer that more than holds its own against modern titles, and I sincerely wish we could see a modern rerelease. Unfortunately, the Ferrari licensing almost certainly means that will never happen, but at least you can still grab copies of the old versions!

Hit the jump to see the long and winding road we took on this leg of our tour…

Sunday Driving: Pipped to the Post… Twice – OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast #2

Let’s continue our OutRun adventure beneath those glorious Sega blue skies!

OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is one of my favourite arcade racers, and playing through for this series is reminding me quite how much substance there is to it. This is no straight arcade port, by any means; there’s a wealth of different challenges to take on in both the “racing” and “Heart Attack” disciplines, represented by the portly Flagman and a trio of beautiful girlfriends respectively.

Of course, you can still also just play the arcade game if you want, too… but where there’s a “career” of sorts it’s worth getting stuck in, huh? Hit the jump to see how I got on today…

Sunday Driving: Sega Blue Skies – OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast #1

It’s time to start our engines and kick off a new series of Sunday Driving.

This time around, we’ll be exploring Sega and Sumo Digital’s wonderful OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast, which you may recall is a game that I am a big fan of.

This is a classic racer that I’ve been meaning to revisit for quite some time now, so what better time than the present to jump back into an officially licensed Ferrari (from before Sega lost the license) and set course for the distant horizon?

Wii Essentials: Ghost Squad

One of the things I find kind of interesting about how gaming culture in general has developed over time is how people feel about “arcade games”.

Back in the 8- and 16-bit eras of computers and consoles that I grew up with, the seemingly unattainable dream was to have “the arcade experience at home” — or, well, more accurately, an authentic arcade experience at home. This was kind of strange when you think about it, because a lot of home computer and console games already offered experiences of greater complexity, depth and duration than your average quarter-muncher, but still the dream persisted.

Once we got to a stage where our home gaming hardware was more than up to the job of providing an “arcade-perfect” experience, however, many people had become so accustomed to those longer, deeper experiences that the dream of “arcade games” kind of fell by the wayside for a significant proportion of the gaming audience. And consequently, I suspect a fair few people missed out on highly enjoyable cheese like Sega’s Ghost Squad.

Sunday Driving: Finale? – Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed #7

We’ve been making good headway through Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed… but today we clear the game!

Or do we…? This is a Sega game in the classic console mould, after all, so it only stands to reason that seeing the end credits isn’t necessarily the end of the experience…

Regardless, today we see the “ending” of the game… and from there we’ll have to decide what to do next!

Sunday Driving: Pudding?! You Were Always So Quirky, Brian – Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed #6

It’s time for another Sunday Driving session as we continue our playthrough of Sega and Sumo Digital’s wonderful Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

We’re making good progress through the World Tour mode — it should only be another episode or two before we clear all the available events on the normal difficulty we’ve been playing them all on so far.

But what then? Hmm, we’ll have to wait and see, won’t we… Hit the jump for today’s video in the meantime!

Sunday Driving: Amy Maxes Out – Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed #5

Ladies, gentlemen and various woodland creatures… start your engines, ’cause it’s time for another installment of Sunday Driving.

We’ve been playing through Sumo Digital’s excellent Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed on PC and having a ton of fun along the way. For the uninitiated, this fantastic kart racer is particularly well known for having a superb single-player mode, so for those who have found Mario Kart a bit lacking in this regard over the years… check it out.

Hit the jump for the latest episode.
