The MoeGamer 2019 Awards: Ten Years, Ten Games

The MoeGamer Awards are a series of β€œalternative” awards I’ve devised in collaboration with the community to celebrate the sorts of things that never get celebrated in end-of-year roundups!Β Find out more hereΒ β€” and feel free to leave a suggestion on that post if you have any good ideas!

It is, as we’ve already said, the end of a decade. And, as you know, this makes it an ideal time to look back over the last ten years and figure out what experiences were the “best”.

Once again, like the awards for the last decade of visual novels, I’m not interested in the games that were the most critically acclaimed, the ones that sold the most or indeed the ones that are most commonly agreed to be “games of the year” for their respective year of release.

Instead, I’m going to pick out one game for each year of (English language) release that I found personally significant for one reason or another. I’d love to hear your own feelings on this, too, so feel free to share in the comments!

And the winners are…

The MoeGamer Awards 2018: Coolest Transportation Method

The MoeGamer Awards are a series of β€œalternative” awards that I’ve devised in collaboration with the community as an excuse to celebrate the games, experiences and fanbases that have left a particular impression on me in 2018. Find out more andΒ leave a suggestion here!

This award was suggested by Krystallina.

What good is a massive game world if you can’t get around it in style?

No good at all, that’s what! So today’s award celebrates my favourite means of getting around a particular virtual locale without getting wet, dirty, injured or terrified.

Well, maybe not that last one.

And the winner is…

Around the Network

Hello everyone! It’s been a hectic week for me this week, to say the least.

My wife Andie was rushed into hospital with suspected appendicitis early in the week, and then I came down with… something or other as a result of the stress of the whole situation combined with regular visits to A Place Full of Ill People.

Thankfully, Andie’s back home now and I think I’m mostly on the mend… so let’s take a moment to review what’s been going on this week!

Waifu Wednesday: Kathryn Lapucelle

Well, we’ve covered all the other “main” waifus Ramius, Riche and Gurigura fromΒ Evenicle so far, so it’s only fair we give Kathryn some love too!

Kathryn is the last playable character to join protagonist Aster’s family, and she is, for sure, an interesting one — both from a narrative and a mechanical perspective.

Let’s just say that you should probably approach with a certain degree of caution.

Waifu Wednesday: Gurigura

Between the ten different waifus in Evenicle, there’s someone who will appeal to everyone.

Hell, there’s pretty much someone who will appeal to everyone even within the core playable cast of four. And even if someone isn’t your “type”, there are still plenty of interesting and compelling things to discover about them.

As a loud, noisy loli, Gurigura isn’t the type of girl who usually pushes my buttons. But she definitely grew on me over the course of the game, and I came to regard her with a great deal of affection.

The MoeGamer Podcast: Episode 11 – Shadow of Silent Probotectravania in Time. Also Asterix

Hello friends, and welcome to another installment of The MoeGamer Podcast!

After our fairly serious discussion last week, Chris and I decided we wanted to keep things reasonably bright and breezy this week, so it’s a mostly retro-themed episode as we reminisce about our memories of classic Konami.

Hit the jump for the new episode in video and audio format, and don’t forget you can subscribe on YouTubeΒ for all my videos (including Atari A to Z as well as MoeGamer content) or on Soundcloud for the audio-only version of the podcast. Waifu Wednesday: Riche Eden

In honour of the end of our Evenicle slightly-longer-than-a-month — and of today’s surprise announcement that Evenicle is now available on Steam — I thought it was high time we highlighted another of the game’s wonderful wives.

Riche is one of the first characters you meet in the game, and she sticks by your side pretty much for the entire duration, giving you plenty of time to get to know her: who she is, why she is the way she is, why she’s doing what she’s doing and… uh… what she’s “into”, if you catch my meaning.

Let’s take a closer look at one of the most memorable princesses I’ve had the pleasure of fighting alongside for quite some time…

Evenicle: Fighting to Keep the World the Same

Eroge tend to find themselves in a difficult position, with their reputation of being “porn” being a largely contributing factor as to why they rarely get any mainstream recognition.

This is unfortunate, because as we’ve already seen with visual novels like Frontwing’sΒ GrisaiaΒ series and the RPGs in AliceSoft’sΒ RanceΒ series, having 18+ content most certainly does not mean that a work has nothing to say.

On the contrary, the freedom to be as “adult” as you like brings with it the opportunity to explore interesting, mature and thought-provoking themes as well as just sexual content. And such is the case withΒ Evenicle, one of AliceSoft’s strongest games to date, both from mechanical and story perspectives. Let’s take a closer look at its overall narrative.
