Aquaventure: The Game That Deserved a Release

One of the nice things about modern, curated compilations of games from old platforms is that they provide an opportunity for “lost” classics to finally get an audience.

In many cases, “lost” classics were completed and reached a full prototype phase, but just never ended up getting duplicated and distributed to the public. Sometimes this is understandable; at other times, it’s a bit of a mystery.

AquaventureΒ for Atari 2600, which you can play not only in Atari Flashback ClassicsΒ but also as part of theΒ Atari Collection 1Β cartridge on Evercade, definitely falls into the latter category. This game isΒ good, so why didn’t it get released?

Atari ST A to Z: Batman – The Movie

A well-known name in the 16-bit home computer era here in Europe was Ocean Software.

Ocean had many strings to their bow, but one of their most reliable sources of income was movie tie-in games, many of which drew criticism for being somewhat derivative and unimaginative platform games, but which sold well regardless. A good example of a game where they tried something a littleΒ bit different from the usual formula wasΒ Batman: The Movie.

That said, the opening stageΒ isΒ a platform game, and is so monstrously difficult I’d be surprised if everyone saw the other things the game had to offer without making use of the cheat mode… I know I certainly didn’t!
