Waifu Wednesday: Rio Rollins Tachibana

With Rio stepping into the spotlight for today’s episode of Warriors Wednesday, it’s only fitting that we take a look at where she came from and why she’s included in the Warriors All-Stars cast.

She’s not an especially well known character here in the West, since most of her prior appearances have been confined to Japan-only popular media, but she’s had a fairly long and eventful career on her native soil.

So let’s take a look at this feisty young casino dealer and see what makes her tick!

Warriors Wednesday: Her Name is Rio – Warriors All-Stars #5

Arnice takes a back seat this time around as Rio decides to lead the party into battle.

We do our best to fulfil some of Kasumi’s unreasonable demands before moving on to face Laegrinna, star of Deception IV: Blood Ties. She does not want to go down without a rather sneaky fight, but surely the invincible Girl Power team of Rio, Arnice, Christophorous, Kasumi and Honoka will prevail, non?

Warriors All-Stars is, so far, doing a very good job of paying homage to its incredibly diverse source material through a combination of its playable characters, stages, music and overall game design. We’re in this for the long haul, I think!

#ThankYouPatrons – A Message of Gratitude

I posted this quite late last night, so although it’s technically a day late I’d like to share something important.

Yesterday was #ThankYouPatrons day on Patreon, and creators from all over the world have been sharing messages of gratitude for the people who support them — whether it’s generous contributors on Patreon or similar services, or those who help out in other ways, such as leaving likes and comments, following on blog pages and social media, subscribing on YouTube and all that good stuff.

I love doing this, and every day I am filled with gratitude that other people enjoy and appreciate what I do, too. So hopefully that comes across in this message to you all.

If you’d like to support my work, please do stop by Patreon to find out more, and get access to exclusive daily blog posts, weekly vlogs and monthly wallpapers. You can find my Patreon page at https://patreon.com/petedavison.

The Demon Crystal: House Party

It’s always interesting to look back at anything that claims to be a “pioneer” of something — especially when the title in question isn’t as well-known as some of its peers.

That’s why I was intrigued to take a look at The Demon Crystal, a game that originally released for a variety of Japanese home computers back in the mid-’80s, and which more recently had an enhanced port to Windows PCs and Nintendo Switch.

Original creator YMCAT and new publisher Regista claim that The Demon Crystal was a pioneer of the action RPG genre, although from a casual glance you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a straightforward arcade game. What does this peculiar adventure have to offer?

Atari A to Z: Neptune’s Daughters

Splish-splash, I was taking a bath, and then suddenly I was beset with crabs. Crabs, crabs everywhere.

In Neptune’s Daughters from English Software, you take on the role of Aquaman as he strives to rescue the eponymous young ladies from the slimy clutches of a mean ol’ sea serpent. Along the way, he’ll encounter poisonous sucker plants, oxygenated amoebae, an amorous octopus and the most dangerous walls on the planet. Can he survive the perils that lie beneath the waves?

There’s a glimpse of pixellated boob in it for you if you’re victorious. Don’t get too excited, though. It seems those daughters just aren’t that into you. Maybe it’s the gills…

Around the Network

Good evening! Another week draws to a close, we’re a week closer to Christmas and Pokémon is out! Truly, the festive season begins here. Probably.

We’ve got one more week to run on our current feature exploring Shade’s games Bullet Girls Phantasia and Gun Gun Pixies, and then I will likely continue to explore the former’s substantial postgame in an upcoming (possibly irregular) video series, so please look forward to that. From there, we’re looking forward to a bit of Pokémon funtimes, plus the now-traditional MoeGamer Awards for December.

Before we get to all that, though, let’s see what you might have missed this week.

Atari A to Z Flashback: Basic Math

You know how much people judge a new gaming system by its launch lineup these days? Well, the Atari 2600 had a game called Basic Math among its initial titles. It is exactly what it sounds like. Be grateful for what you get today!

To be fair, we’re talking about the late ’70s here, where interactive entertainment you could connect to your TV was still new, exciting and a little scary to some people — so the prospect of having something educational to use on the system was probably quite appealing to concerned parents of the era.

It’s just a shame they really took that “Basic” part of the title to heart perhaps a little too much…

I Want Your Help With the MoeGamer 2019 Awards!

For the last couple of years, I’ve devoted December to a series of “alternative awards” based on things I’ve experienced and written about over the course of the last year.

The MoeGamer Awards provides both me and you with an opportunity to review what we’ve seen in the last year here on MoeGamer, to revisit some things that I feel are worth looking at again, and to highlight some things that I don’t feel got enough attention first time around.

A big part of the fun of this event is getting suggestions from you lot as to what I should write about, so I am once again soliciting suggestions from you, yes, you, dear reader. Hit the jump to find out more!

Final Fantasy Marathon: The Fires of Hell – Final Fantasy I #20

We’re well into the endgame of the PSP incarnation of Final Fantasy now; today we delve into the second of four “Soul of Chaos” dungeons.

Hellfire Chasm features 10 floors arranged in a random order, with a choice of two Final Fantasy IV bosses to fight on both the 5th and 10th. In order to fill out your Bestiary completely, you’ll need to run the dungeon at least twice to smack ’em all down.

Bring plenty of supplies; today’s a long trip, but we’re just getting started!

The best of overlooked and underappreciated computer and video games, from yesterday and today.
