Warriors Wednesday: If There Are No Biscuits, There Shall Be Only Death – Warriors Orochi #18

The Wu campaign continues apace as Sun Ce and compatriots attempt to recapture some vital storehouses.

As we all know, an army can’t fight on an empty stomach. And this is just as true in Orochi’s world as it is in our own. As such, when our former Best Boy Mitsuhide Akechi decides to take it upon himself to cut off the Wu forces’ supply lines, there is only one way forward.

Do not stand between Sun Ce and his biscuits.

Atari A to Z: Realm of Impossibility

Electronic Arts are pretty widely disliked by much of the gaming community these days, so it’s easy to forget their somewhat humble and interesting roots.

As their name suggests, they favoured releasing titles that were highly interesting and creative — artistic, you might say — rather than just the same old thing we’d seen elsewhere. In many ways, they heralded in one of the earliest eras of the video game “auteur”.

One great example from the early ’80s was Mike Edwards’ Realm of Impossibility, an enhanced and expanded version of Edwards’ earlier game Zombies. This is a non-violent action adventure that tasks you with exploring a variety of isometric dungeons that get increasingly… peculiar in their geometry as the game progresses. Escher would be proud.

Sunday Driving: Don’t Lose Your Girlfriend! – OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast #4

After some… rather varied results on our last outing, I thought today we’d concentrate on a specific part of OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast.

Specifically, I thought it was time we took a look at the next tier of Flagman’s objectives. These mostly encompass racing and related disciplines, but there are some interesting challenges along the way that aren’t quite what you might normally expect from an arcade racer…

Hit the jump to see how things went today… and if I lost my girlfriend!

New Game Plus: I Got Holes in M’Ghost List – Project Zero #6

Today we continue with Project Zero’s postgame… and I find myself afflicted with a curse through my own silly fault.

Today we continue on with the first chapter of our Nightmare mode replay, attempting to keep an eye out for as many missing ghosts from the Ghost List as possible.

Unfortunately, it seems, fate had other plans for me. Hit the jump to see what went on.

Atari ST A to Z: The Light Corridor

At any point in gaming history, it seems that there’s always one particular territory doomed to be singled out for making “weird” games.

What “weird” actually translates to in most circumstances is “interesting, unconventional, subversive and highly creative”; regrettably, while “weird” is undoubtedly a more concise description, it also carries with it somewhat pejorative connotations.

While today Japan tends to be singled out as the “weird” locale of choice, back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, it was France putting out the most creative, unusual and fascinating games on the market, and Infogrames was a leading developer and publisher during this period.

Here’s The Light Corridor, Infogrames’ delightfully abstract 3D take on the traditional “bat and ball” game — an oddly hypnotic experience that, while simple to play, is extremely addictive…

Warriors Wednesday: Worst Sneak Attack Ever – Warriors Orochi #17

Wu, Wu! That’s the sound of the pain train coming your way, Orochi… just, uh, not just yet.

Sun Ce and friends continue being forced into an uneasy alliance with Captain Snakeypants as people important to them are held hostage. Sun Ce has little choice but to go along with Orochi’s scheming until he and his companions have a suitable opportunity to take matters into their own hands.

That means a whole lot of fighting former friends… as well as fending off possibly the least subtle “sneak attack” in all of history. Hit the jump to see how the battle went.

Atari A to Z: Quasimodo

Dem bells, dem bells, dem… blue bells… wait, I think I’m confusing at least two unrelated things there, aren’t I?

Ahem. Anyway. This is Quasimodo by Synapse Software, brought West by U.S. Gold’s early imprint Synsoft. It’s an unusual platform-action game that involves flinging rocks at Bad People climbing ladders, swinging from bell-ropes, swearing at bats and collecting crystals.

And despite its hunchbacked hero, it most certainly is not a clone of the arcade game Hunchback. Give poor old Quasi the respect he deserves!

Sunday Driving: Coast 2 Ghost – OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast #3

Let’s go for another drive, shall we? Get ready!

Today’s road trip adventure once again takes us beneath the Sega blue skies into the world of OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast by Sega and Sumo Digital. This is an arcade racer that more than holds its own against modern titles, and I sincerely wish we could see a modern rerelease. Unfortunately, the Ferrari licensing almost certainly means that will never happen, but at least you can still grab copies of the old versions!

Hit the jump to see the long and winding road we took on this leg of our tour…

New Game Plus: The Definition of Insanity – Project Zero #5

That ol’ reliable quote about the definition of insanity being something along the lines of “doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results” is apparently widely attributed to Albert Einstein (and Far Cry 3), but it seems Einstein probably didn’t actually say it.

It’s a good quote, though, and particularly applicable to situations like that which you are about to witness in Himuro Mansion, courtesy of my continuing adventures through Project Zero’s postgame.

Hit the jump and see precisely what I’m talking about… ROPES!

Atari ST A to Z: Klax

It is the ’90s, and there is time for Klax.

To be fair, there is time for Klax whenever you care to make time for Klax. It is currently 2018, for example, and there is still time for Klax, so I always thought this particular marketing slogan was rather odd. But it was certainly memorable if nothing else, and few would argue that the dude depicted playing Klax on the cover of Tengen and Domark’s Atari ST release of this match-3 puzzler is not a quintessential example of a distinctly ’90s-looking gamer.

Anyway. Klax is one of the earliest puzzle games I recall having a good time with — I actually played it before I played Tetris for the first time, I believe — and it still holds up well today. Though I’m absolutely not as good at it as I used to be. And the Atari Lynx version is better. But this ST version is still worth a look!
