Good morning and REMAIN INDOORS! Not that I’m sure that will be a problem for a lot of us, but regardless… stay safe, everyone.

As many people are discovering, a global pandemic is a fine time to hole up in your place of residence with lots of snack foods and a large stack of video games, and enjoy them to your heart’s content. I’ve been doing just that — not that it’s a big change from my usual existence — and coping all right. Just remember to say hi to your nearest and dearest now and again

And of course, you can always come and hang out on your favourite site about overlooked and underappreciated games from around the world and through the ages. So with that in mind, let’s check out what you might have missed in the last week.

Hello everyone, and welcome to the conclusion of another week. I hope you don’t have the zombie plague, and that if you have found yourself self-isolated, you have plenty of things to keep yourself occupied!

My day job wants “as many people as possible” to work from home, but unfortunately has only provided half of my team with the facility to do so, so I still have to go into work tomorrow. Still, I feel like it’s going to be fairly quiet there for a little while!

Anyway. Enough talk of infectious diseases; let’s look at what you might have missed this week.

Morning everyone! Sorry this is a day late once again, but it was a busy ol’ weekend recording and editing podcasts, as well as getting various bits and pieces in order.

I have a couple of days off from the day job this week, which will mostly be spent catching up on stuff that I’ll be covering over on Nintendo Life very soon, so please watch out for those articles in the next couple of weeks! Due to embargoes, I can’t talk about what those things actually are yet, but let’s just say both will be of interest to those who enjoy the stuff I cover here!

Anyway. Let’s catch up on what you might have missed in the last week. Hit the jump and join me!

Happy Birthday, PlayStation 2

Sony’s PlayStation 2 was a landmark console for both the games industry at large — and for many individuals of a certain age, too.

The console turned 20 years old on March 4, 2020 — assuming we’re going by its original Japanese release date, anyway — and thus that provides as good a reason as any to look back on this wonderful console, share some fond memories and explore how this remarkable machine is still relevant in my daily gaming life even today.

Grab a slice of cake and get ready to party, then; it’s time to celebrate.

Morning all! Apologies this is a day later than usual, but I had a busy weekend with a lot of recording and the weekly roundup just slipped my mind! Never mind; better late than never, as they say.

In the coming days, alongside the Atelier MegaFeature, we’ll be taking a look at each of the games in the two Psikyo Shooting Stars collections for Nintendo Switch. We’ve already kicked this off with a look at Strikers 1945 and its sequel, so please look forward to more shoot ’em up funtimes very soon.

In the meantime, though, let’s have a look at what you might have missed in the last week. Join me after the jump!

Good evening boys and girls! I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend. I had a busy Saturday but have spent most of today doing nothing but playing Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana, which is 100% fine by me.

I’m making good progress through the game and should have it beaten soon all being well, so then we can move on. There’s still a long road ahead of us, though — and still lots of things to talk about just with Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana by itself! — so I hope you continue to enjoy this journey as much as I am.

For now, let’s take a look at what you might have missed this week. Hit the jump to find out more.

Good evening! It’s nearly the end of the weekend, and I feel like I’ve spent a significant proportion of it asleep. Evidently I needed it.

Anyway, that hasn’t stopped me from making a few videos and playing some more Atelier Iris: Eternal Manaso it all worked out fine in the end.

But enough about me; you’re here to find out what you might have missed this week. So let’s look at just that! Join me after the jump.

#LoveYourBacklog Week, 2020

Hello! Are you following Later Levels? If not, get on that; Kim writes lots of lovely things about games, occasionally assisted by guest stars!

Kim’s also one of those people who is great at organising others, and encouraging them to do cool things like supporting charitable efforts and writing community blog posts. She also runs a thoroughly pleasant Discord where you can find support and advice from your fellow writers — as well as some people to read what you’ve written!

Last year, Kim encouraged us to embrace our backlog of unplayed or unfinished games, not fear it. This week, #LoveYourBacklog is back once again… and who am I to stand in the way of such an admirable endeavour?

Good evening folks! I slept in until lunchtime and then spent the rest of the day editing a new podcast episode, which will be making its way into your ears and eyes tomorrow. It’s a good ‘un!

While that renders — and while I decide whether or not I want to eat the Rustlers burger in my fridge having consumed a sufficient quantity of Starburst to make me feel a little queasy — I figured it was as good a time as any to do the weekly roundup.

So here is the weekly roundup! Join me after the jump and we’ll check out what you might have missed this week.

Check Out My Prison Princess Review!

Full article coming later today, but this is super-important to acknowledge: the commercial, mainstream outlet Nintendo Life was kind enough to give me the opportunity to write about qureate’s new point-and-click puzzle adventure game for Nintendo Switch, Prison Princess.

This is noteworthy because it marks a substantial shift in the site’s editorial policy: they’re now keen to specifically seek out specialist writers for more niche-interest games such as shoot ’em ups or games with provocative ecchi content, rather than passing them to staff writers less familiar with the cultural context or background of such works. This will hopefully lead to fewer situations where there’s a huge disconnect between a critic and the target audience of a particular game. And hopefully more articles from people like me and their new, frighteningly knowledgeable shmup specialist!

I’d like to heartily thank Damien McFerran from Nintendo Life for the kind opportunity to write about this game — and for the site’s admirable new approach. And I would please encourage you, dear reader, to support this change in outlook: it’s exactly the sort of thing we need to see happening on more mainstream sites. It deserves rewarding.

And a great way to do that is simply to go and check out my review of Prison Princess over on Nintendo Life — you can do that by clicking right here!

Thanks for your support, and I hope you enjoy the review.
