Around the Network

Hello everyone! It’s the end of of another week, so you know what time it is — weekly roundup time!

Things have been proceeding well at the new day job — be sure to stop by Rice Digital if you haven’t already, as it’s a great place to hang out if you’re fans of Asian video games and other forms of popular entertainment. And we’ve got some super-cool stuff coming up in the next few weeks and months to tie in with some big releases! Please look forward to it.

In the meantime, though, let’s check out what you might have missed this week in the various places I’ve been Doing Things Online…

The Killing Game Show: The Only Way is Up – Fatal Rewind, the Bizarre Creations MegaFeature, continues with a look at the game that gave the feature its name — a beautiful but challenging run-and-gun platformer published by Psygnosis.

Groove Coaster Wai Wai Party!!!! – Rockin’ Out with the VTubers and Vocaloids – I finally bit the bullet and paid out the vast entry fee to get involved in the world of Groove Coaster on Switch, and I don’t regret a thing.

short;Play: Tokyo Highway Challenge – It’s time to race round and round and round and round in this arcade-sim hybrid for the Dreamcast.

Waifu Wednesday: Lenna Charlotte Tycoon – I’m playing Final Fantasy V before bed at the moment, and I’ve found myself rather liking young Lenna (or Reina, as she’s known in the PS1 version I’m playing!) — here’s a look at her many charms.

Project Eris and the PlayStation Classic as a “Retro Box” – I modded my PlayStation Classic using the “Project Eris” software. Here’s how I got on — and why you might want to consider doing it too.

Evercade A to Z: Boogerman – Booger! It’s time to take a trip through the snot-encrusted world of this questionable Interplay “classic”.

Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk – Wonder and Danger in the Twilight – The Atelier MegaFeature continues with a look at the exploration and combat mechanics in Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk, first of a fan favourite trilogy.

10 of the most awesome non-medieval RPGs – In response to an Escapist op-ed about there being “too many” medieval RPGs, I provide a helpful list of 10 great RPGs that are not at all medieval.

A VTuber newbie learns about VTubers – Our man Trent decides to learn what a “VTuber” is, and why you should care.

Ecchi and erotic games are about more than just sexuality – An important reminder for anyone who has ever come across someone trying to shame them for what they’re into.

Looking forward to the Nagatoro anime in April – With the legendary Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro manga finally getting an anime adaptation in April, here’s a primer if you’re yet to jump into this delightful series.

4 criminally underrated Hololive VTubers you need to watch – Your boi Conor knows his stuff about VTubers, so here’s four picks a little outside the “mainstream” that you should take the time to check out.

Sony’s five forgotten first-party franchises – With Sony’s apparent attempts to “Americanise” itself over the last few years, a number of excellent franchises have fallen by the wayside. Here’s five of the best that we might never see again.

A great year for JRock – Monsieur Trent provides us with a rundown of some of last year’s highlights in the world of Japanese rock.

Waifu Wednesday: Sae Niijima (Persona 5) – We kick off a weekly column with a celebration of one of P5’s hottest ladies.

The confused identity of Princess Connect! Re: Dive – This anticipated mobile game finally released this week, with what might initially appear to be a confused identity — but which is actually quite a considerate piece of design.

Super Baby 2 Spotlight: Dragon Ball FighterZ Guide – With Super Baby 2 hitting the Dragon Ball FighterZ roster, the ever-reliable Conor provides us with a breakdown of why he’s such an interesting addition.

What we want from Zelda’s 35th Anniversary – With Zelda’s 35th birthday coming up in about a month, Trent ponders what celebrations we might see.

Redo of Healer’s second episode brings the pain – The broadcast version of Redo of Healer, which features some of the most heavy-handed editing I’ve ever seen, shows that some anime just aren’t meant for TV. Which is a shame, because the horrific scenes in the uncut version are extremely impactful, and really work for the story.

10 of the best sexy games on Steam – More than just money burning a hole in your pocket? Here’s a fine selection of sexy games available right now on Steam to relieve some of that tension.

The 4 best Bulma outfits – Bulma is, of course, an iconic part of Dragon Ball, but she’s changed her look many times over the years. Trent takes a look at four of her best outfits.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose’s creative endeavours on the Digitiser YouTube channel, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, blogger/YouTuber meggsngrits and TangoPunk, the newest zine on the block, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And as always, it’s time for a quick trip around the WordPress Reader to see what everyone’s been up to!

Review: Kimetsu no Yaiba Fangs (Infernal Monkey) – The world’s best onahole reviewer takes on a long-awaited, fangtastic thing to stick his dick into. The googly eyes photo along makes this worth a read.

Writing Prompt: Is it strange to not rate based on enjoyment at all? (Umai Yomu Anime Blog) – Yomu has some interesting food for thought for those who spend their time reviewing things.

Seven things that remind me of my childhood (Everything is bad for you) – AK ponders nostalgia — and some of the specific things that trigger it in his case.

‘A 14 Year Old Boy’s Rape/Revenge Fantasy’ Redo of Healer – Episode 2 Review (Cactus Matt Anime) – Matt takes a look at the (uncut) version of Redo of Healer’s brutal second episode, and ponders how it’s a different kind of “horror movie”.

Game Review: Wonderful Dizzy (Retro Arcadia) – stvnorman explores the history of Dizzy — and takes a look at his newest incarnation.

That’s your lot! I’m off to go and play some Atelier Escha & Logy because I keep getting distracted by lots of other fun things and am running a little behind my own arbitrary schedule! I should never have bought Groove Coaster… oh well. Time to get caught up!

Until next time, thank you very much, as always, for all your support of my work. I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s stuff — and, of course, plenty more to come next week and beyond!
