Around the Network

A late one today! I’ve been podcast editing all day, in my defence, but with it being “back to work” tomorrow I wanted to make sure I got the weekly roundup done before I went to sleep!

So it is a brand new year once again, and after the chaotic nonsense of 2020, I think everyone is keen for a fresh start. It’ll continue to be business as usual around here, though — so expect more coverage of overlooked, underappreciated and retro games from over the years!

Posting schedule has been a bit all over the place over the holiday period, but hit the jump to see what you might have missed in the last week or so!

Q&A: December 2020 – Want to know about my dream VTuber guests and anime kinks? Wonder no longer!

Brok the InvestiGator: Punch and Click Adventuring – One of the most promising looking games of the coming year, Brok is an intriguing combination of point-and-click adventure and beat ’em up that looks set to be something special. Here’s a look at the free Prologue chapter.

Tokyo Highway Challenge: Around and Around and Around – Do you like racing around in circles but prefer your tracks to be a little more interesting than NASCAR circuits? Enter Tokyo Highway Challenge, a Dreamcast racer about proving your might on one famous road.

short;Play: Fractalus – One of my favourite games of all time gets an excellent — and free — remake.

Waifu Wednesday: Zhenji – By popular request, we look into the fascinating background of one of the Warriors series’ most beautiful ladies.

The MoeGamer Top 10 of 2020 – It wouldn’t be the end of the year without some sort of Game of the Year discussion, now, would it?

Evercade A to Z: Food Fight – An Atari 7800 classic gets a much wider audience thanks to the Atari Collection 1 cartridge for the Evercade.

Happy New Year! (2021 Edition) – Obligatory New Year post — including some plans for upcoming features!

The Music of Atelier, Vol. 9: Atelier Lulua – The Scion of Arland – It’s time once again to celebrate the sterling work of Gust’s sound team as we admire Atelier Lulua’s rousing soundtrack.

Atari A to Z

This week, we’ve got a peculiar 8-bit game that promises “nine games in one”, a solid arcade conversion for ST, and one of my least favourite Atari 2600 games to date.

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just £1 a month (about $1.50) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site. S-Rank (£5+ a month) Patrons also get to play a part in the monthly Q&A video!

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose’s creative endeavours on the Digitiser YouTube channel, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, blogger/YouTuber meggsngrits and TangoPunk, the newest zine on the block, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

A lot of people have been taking some well-earned time to themselves over the holidays, but here’s a few nuggets from around the WordPress community I’ve managed to dig up from the last week or so!

11 Vita Games to Look Forward To in 2021 (kresnik258gaming) – Sony’s Vita still manages to cling to life somehow, even with the Switch having largely replaced it for a lot of what the platform became known for over its lifetime. But that doesn’t mean you should chuck it out! (I mean, don’t do that anyway.) Kresnik’s got some games you might want to watch out for in the next year.

In Memoriam: Adobe Flash (Nepiki Gaming) – Flash is dead, long live Flash and all that. Nepiki shares some memories of the now-obsolete online format.

There is NO Core Paper Mario (DJMMT’s Gaming (& More) Blog) – djmmtgamechangerdoc says what everyone who wishes people would stop moaning about Paper Mario has been thinking for years now.

What Even is 2020 – My Year in Search Terms (I drink and watch anime) – While there are a lot of entertaining end-of-year roundup posts around this period each year, few offer more giggles than Irina’s look at the weird and wonderful ways people arrived at her blog.

Xbox Series S Impressions (The Late Night Session) – It’s all too easy to dismiss the little brother of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox lineup, but The Night Owl provides some solid and helpful impressions of what it’s like to have as a “second console” for your family.

And that’s your lot for now. Those of you who are back to work tomorrow, I salute you. (I’m also among you, so we’re all in this together and other such platitudes.) Here’s hoping 2021 is a better year for all of us — and thank you, as always, for all your support!

  1. Thank you for the shout-out Pete! I’ve unfortunately been bedridden since New Year’s Eve so I haven’t been able to make a post myself and wish everone a Happy New Year, but I hope you had a great New Year’s Eve and I’m looking forward to all the articles in 2021!
