Around the Network

Hello everyone! Hope you’re well. I’ve been enjoying the new Lynx collections for the Evercade this weekend — expect some articles and videos about those very soon.

As we head towards December and a potentially confusing holiday season, it’s business as usual here at MoeGamer Towers. I likely won’t be doing a full MoeGamer Awards for the whole month this year, however; with the majority of my attention being heaped on the Atelier series (and a fair amount still left to go!) I don’t want to do a bunch of awards that are nothing but Atelier games. Though I have written about a fair few other bits and pieces over the year, too, so there will be some awards posts along the way — maybe one a week. We’ll see.

Anyway, enough blathering about things that haven’t happened yet — you’re here to find out what you might have missed in the last week. So let’s take a look!

Warriors Orochi 2: More of the Same? – Kicking off an exploration of Warriors Orochi 2 — is it just a bland clone of the original or is there more to it? Take a guess.

From the Archives: A Life Less Ordinary – Leading a Virtual Life – What is the appeal of the “life sim” and where did the various approaches to this curious type of game come from?

Earthworm Jim 2: See What Sticks – Absolute chaos in video game form — for better or worse!

short;Play: Burnout 2 – Best Burnout. Don’t @ me.

Waifu Wednesday: VShojo – Oh No! More VTubers! This time around, it’s a US-based organisation that promises to put its talent first rather than corporate (or overseas) shenanigans — and some familiar and new faces in the initial lineup.

Old Towers: Up and Down and Side to Side – Another gem from the Mega Cat Studios collection for the Evercade, Old Towers challenges you to get through a series of tricky puzzles using a distinctive control scheme.

Evercade A to Z: Double Dragon – Time to kick some ass on the Evercade, thanks to Technos Japan’s excellent NES version of the classic beat ’em up.

The Music of Atelier, Vol. 8: Atelier Meruru – The Apprentice of Arland Once again, it’s time to celebrate the sterling work of Gust’s incredible sound team with one of their catchiest soundtracks.

This week we’ve got a gratuitous (but public domain) ripoff, a top-down racer that I don’t completely suck at, and a baseball game I had a lot more fun with than I ever thought I would… albeit mostly for the wrong reasons.

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just £1 a month (about $1.50) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site. S-Rank (£5+ a month) Patrons also get to play a part in the monthly Q&A video!

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose’s creative endeavours on the Digitiser YouTube channel, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage, fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, blogger/YouTuber meggsngrits and TangoPunk, the newest zine on the block, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And as usual, it’s time to hit up the WordPress community to see what they’ve all been up to this week.

EXP Share: Gaming Escapism Begins (Ace Asunder) – Solarayo shares a heartfelt story about the importance of gaming when dealing with difficult times in one’s life.

#Controversed: Don’t Attack Actors and Voice Actors, Be a Force of Positivity (Mechanical Anime Reviews) – As part of the #Controversed collaborative event, Scott shares a suggestion that we should all be able to get behind.

Introduction to Sims Saturday (MeL Universe) – Mel’s return to blogging continues with a new regular feature. Go help welcome her back to the fold with some support on the first installment of Sims Saturday!

Review: Dusk – Spinning Guns (NekoJonez’s Gaming Blog) – NekoJonez checks out retro-style shooter Dusk and brings us a blood-splattered review for your delectation.

Heart of the Woods Yuri Game Review – A Compelling Modern Day Fantasy (Blerdy Otome) – pokeninja90 checks out one of the more well-regarded English-first visual novels in recent memory and finds it to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I want to try this one for myself in the near future.

And that’s your lot for now. Hope you’ve had a pleasant weekend and that my US-based readers have had the opportunity to stuff themselves with lots of delicious holiday food with at least one special someone — even if your time together had to be spent electronically.

Thanks as always for all your support, and I hope you enjoy what’s coming up in the next week!
