Around the Network

Hello everyone! Hope you’re having as pleasant a weekend as can be had in these trying times.

Here in the UK, we’re about to enter a second “lockdown” period — supposedly for a month, but judging by the widespread idiocy on social media I suspect it’s going to last for a whole lot longer than that. Still, I’m not too worried; staying inside just means more time to play games, write about them and make videos. Which means more stuff for you (yes, you) to enjoy. Also my day job paid for a nice chair, so now I have a nice chair, too.

Leaving all that aside for now, though, let’s take a look at what you might have missed in the last week!

Super Robin Hood: Feared By the Bad, Loved By the Good – A look at the NES reimagining of the Oliver Twins’ first commercially successful game, now available as part of the Evercade library.

The Coma: Recut – Extracurricular Horror – With it being spoopy season, we should probably look at at least one spoopy game, no? Here’s Korean horror adventure The Coma, a surprisingly thought-provoking affair.

short;Play: Mad Rat Dead – Nippon Ichi Software’s rhythmic platformer came out this week, so let’s take a look at a bit of what it has to offer.

Waifu Wednesday: Keina Swaya – Every good princess needs a good maid. And Keina is a very good maid to Princess Meruru.

MotorPsycho: The 7800’s Best Motorcycle Racing Game – Also the 7800’s only motorcycle racing game, but don’t tell anyone.

Evercade A to Z: Dig Dug II – Spending some time enjoying this overlooked Namco classic.

Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland – Building a Legacy – The Atelier MegaFeature continues with a first look at the third Arland game, in which a tomboyish princess uses her alchemy to build up her kingdom.

This week we’ve got mad bombing, chilled-out arcade-style pool and a selection of rough approximations of sports. Fun times!

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose’s creative endeavours on the Digitiser YouTube channel, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage, fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, blogger/YouTuber meggsngrits and TangoPunk, the newest zine on the block, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And as usual, let’s take a quick wander around the WordPress Reader to see what the good folks in the blogging community have been up to this week.

All You Need To Know About Kotobukiya’s Horror Bishoujo Line (Two Happy Cats) – Like classic horror movies? Like pretty girls? Then you’ll want to check out this array of super-cool figurines.

Anime Month: Introduction (Raistlin0903) – Raistlin’s kicking off an anime-centric month on his site this November, so stop by and check out what he’ll be covering!

Baka Dakedo: One Good Bastard (Dewbond) – In this thoroughly NSFW post, Dewbond contemplates the “ugly bastard” hentai tag and his favourite example of it being used surprisingly wholesomely.

Discovering OutRun on Sega Game Gear (Retro Arcadia) – Home ports of classic arcade games can often be fascinating to explore, as stvnorman has discovered with this look at the handheld version of Sega’s beloved racer.

The Haunted Mansion: Call of the Spirits Review (A Geek Girl’s Guide) – In the mood for a spooky boardgame? Michelle’s got you covered.

And that’ll do you for this week. As always, thank you for all your support. If you have a moment this week, taking a minute to retweet or share some of my work here or on YouTube is very much appreciated. I’ll do my best to provide some solid entertainment for those of you who are, like me, staring down another lockdown situation.

Stay strong! We’ll get through this eventually. Nantoka naru naru.

  1. Thanks so much for the sharing of my post! I appreciate it! 😀
I hear you about the lockdown: I’ve been working from home now since March of this year. It’s tough, but well….we get by I guess, and like you I also have a nice chair from work, so there is that! 😊
Take care man, and stay safe! 😊

  2. Thank you for including my Kotobukiya post in your article! I hope the lockdown goes smoothly, well, as smoothly as it can possibly go. Like Raistlin said, take care!

  3. Was sorry to hear about the lockdown news. 🙁 It’s been quite a change here where I’ve also been in isolation since March but it looks like we might finally be coming out of it. Fingers crossed for you for the coming weeks.
