Around the Network

Good morning everyone! Sorry for the lack of one of these last weekend, but I was super-busy and ended up not finding the time. You can enjoy a bumper edition today to make up for it.

Life has been continuing pretty much as usual here at MoeGamer Towers, with the Atelier MegaFeature continuing apace. We’re just wrapping up Atelier Totori on the site right now; next up is Atelier Meruru, which I’ve already finished my replay of. I’m currently enjoying Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland a great deal, and am looking forward to writing about that.

Anyway. Enough talk! Let’s see what you might have missed in the last couple of weeks.

MoeGamer

The MoeGamer Podcast: Episode 43 – Brake for the Snake – Chris and I take some time to chat about arcade-style racers in the modern style — including recent attempts to revive the genre such as Inertial Drift.

Nurse Love Syndrome: Beauty is Skin-Deep – We continue our exploration of visual novel Nurse Love Syndrome with a look at Yamanouchi’s route, exploring the idea that first impressions aren’t always entirely correct — and that people are usually hiding things.

short;Play: Joust 2 – Survival of the Fittest – Did you know there was a sequel to Joust? A lot of people don’t, so let’s play it!

Waifu Wednesday: Melvia Siebel – Totori’s adventuring companion is one of the strongest women in the whole Atelier series, and a delightful character to spend some time getting to know. So let’s do that!

Star Ixiom: Still Shining – The sequel to Star Luster for PlayStation provides a fabulous strategic space combat experience, combining elements of fast action and tactical role-playing games.

Evercade A to Z: Burnin’ Rubber – One of the most addictive games in the Evercade’s launch lineup, Data East’s Burnin’ Rubber is an early example of the vertically scrolling, top-down driving game that predates Midway’s better-known Spy Hunter by a whole year.

Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland – Beyond the City Walls – One of the biggest strengths of Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland – and the reason it’s such a fan favourite — is how well-crafted its world is. Let’s take a look at how that is achieved.

Burnout 2: Point of Impact – They Don’t Make ‘Em Like This Any More – The podcast above got me playing some classic racers. And Burnout 2: Point of Impact is one of the finest there has ever been.

Double Dragon II: The Revenge – Who Needs Arcade Perfection? – Like its predecessor, the NES version of Double Dragon II differs significantly from the arcade original. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing!

short;Play: Star Ixiom – Want to see Star Ixiom in action? I got you covered.

Waifu Wednesday: Filly – Esty’s sister is a fun presence throughout both Atelier Totori and Atelier Meruru, and enjoys some substantial character growth in her own right.

Blazing Lazers: Pew Pew PC Engine – The PC Engine is home to a wide selection of absolutely classic shooters, and Blazing Lazers is as good a place as any to start exploring them!

Evercade A to Z: Incantation A very, very late era release for Super NES from Titus, Incantation is a visually lush yet frustratingly unfinished-feeling platformer. Let’s play it!

Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland – A Journey to Adulthood – The overall story of Atelier Totori is fairly non-linear, but the main “point” of it all is to depict a young, timid and rather meek young lady’s growth in confidence and ability as she approaches adulthood. Let’s explore that further.

A real mix of things to explore from the last couple of weeks! We’ve got experimental “musical mazes”, arcade conversions, genre-defining racing games, solid top-down shooters, pre-Lara Croft mascots and late ’80s takes on Breakout. Enjoy!
