Around the Network

Good evening everyone, and I hope those of you in the idiot-infested United Kingdom are looking forward to a bank holiday tomorrow.

As always, there’s been plenty going on around here, and I haven’t even had to leave the house to do any of it. Just the ticket during these difficult times, I’m sure you’ll agree — so I hope the things I’ve made bring you some entertainment if you, too, have been stuck in your home.

Hit the jump and let’s catch up on what you might have missed in the last week.

MoeGamer

The MoeGamer Podcast: Episode 42 – The Never-Ending Arcade – We finally get around to doing that Evercade episode we’ve been talking about doing for ages. And realise that there are at least several more episodes on the subject in us yet!

Ninja Golf: Hitting the Links (And Everyone Who Stands In Your Way) – Speaking of the Evercade, the first cartridge in this charming retro system’s collection contains the first re-release of BlueSky Software’s legendary Atari 7800 title Ninja Golf since 1990. Get on that!

short;Play: Satazius Next – Everybody loves a bit of Gradius. Especially shoot ’em up developer Astro Port, who put together a loving homage to it in the form of Satazius. And then made Satazius even better with Satazius Next.

Waifu Wednesday: Lionela Heinze – This week’s waifu is Liona-chan from Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland, who not only has a mysterious story to tell, she’s also an interesting exploration of stress and anxiety.

Mappy: Your Move, Cat – While not one of Namco’s most well-known titles — and one of its least accessible games, at least in comparison to classics like Pac-Man — Mappy is a fascinating game that laid the groundwork for an entertaining series of platformers.

Final Fantasy Marathon: Pointy Helmets (Final Fantasy III #12) – It’s time for the Warriors of the Light to get new Jobs again. This time around, they’re all taking aim at the prestigious Dragoon class. Because everything around them is suggesting this might be a good idea.

Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland – A New Generation of Alchemy – Delving into Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland’s take on the series’ iconic crafting system shows that the jump in generation didn’t just bring about improved visuals — it also brought us considerably deeper, more complex mechanics.

Atari A to Z

This week we’ve got a 2018 port of a Commodore 16 classic — put together by the original author, no less, plus flatulence and bollocks, and possibly the best version of an arcade classic on home platforms.

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. At the present time, this also includes exclusive patrons-only weekly vlogs and Let’s Plays at the weekends! If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just $1 a month (about 80p) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose’s creative endeavours on the Digitiser YouTube channel, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage, fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, alternative fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Kim Justice, and blogger/YouTuber meggsngrits, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And as always, time for a quick zip around the WordPress Reader for a look at what the community’s been up to recently.

Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 1, Anime tv series (2015) (Raistlin0903) – God, was that show really five years ago? Anyway, Raistlin’s back, and he’s having a good old look at an anime that a lot of people — including me — enjoyed very much when it first broadcast. And now there’s a game, too!

The Guns of Resident Evil: An Experience with Airsoft (Comfortably Adventurous) – Airsoft is a great way to get a lot of the thrill of firing a gun with minimal risk to the wellbeing of yourself and others around you. charlesfwh checks out some Airsoft versions of weapons that appeared in Capcom’s classic survival horror series.

Sci-fi adventure… golf? (Kimimi the Game-Eating She-Monster) – Kimimi’s playing delightfully weird games again, and pretty much everything you need to know is in the title of this post.

The Great JRPG Character Face-Off: Guest Post! (Shoot the Rookie) – pix1001 has been playing host to a substantial collaborative feature about RPG characters, and is delighted to host a guest writer for this special post. Stop by — and be sure to get in touch with pix1001 if you want to take part, too!

The Plague of WordPress: AI Generated Posts (Umai Yomu Anime Blog) – Wherever you go, you can’t get away from spam. Yomu takes a look at the stranger, rather more robotic side of WordPress.

And that’s your lot for this week. Have a lovely week, enjoy the bank holiday if you have one, and try not to catch the death plague. Bill Gates sends his regards.
