Around the Network

I forgot to do this again last week, didn’t I? Apologies! The whole “situation in the world right now”, as everyone keeps euphemistically referring to it, is not doing wonders for my sense of time.

Anyway, I’m here now, and I have lots to share. On top of that, there’s a new episode of The MoeGamer Podcast coming your way tomorrow, so please look forward to that.

So pull up a chair, pour yourself a pleasant beverage, and let’s catch up on what you might have missed over the last couple of weeks!

MoeGamer

BurgerTime: The Original Foot Lettuce – We continue exploring the library of the delightful Evercade, with this look at Data East’s classic arcade title.

Rigid Force Redux: An R-Type By Any Other Name – Like R-Type? You’re gonna love this.

short;Play: Demon’s Souls – I finally got into a Souls game. Enjoy my experiences in this video!

Waifu Wednesday: Chloe Hartzog – An important secondary character in Ulrika’s route through Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy, Chloe Hartzog is an unusual character that it would probably benefit you not to get on the wrong side of.

Titan: Break Out, In and All Around – This Interplay-published title from Titus Interactive is one of the stranger games among the Evercade’s library — but those weird games are some of the most interesting to explore!

Final Fantasy Marathon: Desch’s Destiny (Final Fantasy III #6) – The group ascend the Tower of Owen, and Desch finally remembers who he is and what he’s supposed to be doing.

Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy – Making the Grade – How does character progression work in Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy? Find out in this part of the extensive Atelier MegaFeature!

My Time With Dee Dee, Vol. 2: Learning to Love the Male Gaze – Friend of the site Matt from Digitally Downloaded has been beavering away at a selection of visual novels featuring his site mascot. Here’s an exploration of one of them.

Summer Loop: The Beach Episode as Existentialist Nightmare – And here’s another one!

Asteroids 7800: Besteroids?Back on the Evercade train with possibly my favourite version of Atari arcade classic Asteroids.

short;Play: Neptunia Shooter – Idea Factory International’s April Fool got a bit out of hand, but shooter fans will be very happy about it.

Waifu Wednesday: Refia – Final Fantasy III’s leading lady wasn’t in the original Famicom release, but she’s an endearing part of the 3D remake. Let’s find out a bit more about her!

Inertial Drift Sunset Prologue: A Bold New Take on Arcade Racing – Enjoy arcade racing? Can’t afford a steering wheel? Check out this intriguing game, specifically designed with a rather creative, twin-stick joypad-centric control scheme.

Final Fantasy Marathon: The Power of Fire (Final Fantasy III #7) – Get a job, ya lout! Unfortunately, in the world of Final Fantasy III it’s not quite that easy, because there are fiery caves to traverse first…

Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy – Special Measures in the Darkness – Ulrika’s narrative path through Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy is full of interesting commentary on both the failings of the modern educational system, and how heavily flawed characters can find themselves brought together under the strangest of circumstances.

Atari A to Z

Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve had Viking funtimes, a classic action-adventure from the former champion of indies on Vita, a baseball game that Intellivision liked to mock, 8-bit cellular automata, dual-layer Tetris and a game of angles. Busy days!

Patreon and SubscribeStar

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. At the present time, this also includes exclusive patrons-only weekly vlogs and Let’s Plays at the weekends! If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just $1 a month (about 80p) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site.

I’m also in the process of getting SubscribeStar rolling for those who don’t wish to or aren’t able to use Patreon for whatever reason — I’ve had a few requests for this, so I thought I’d actually get it done. Once that’s up and running and some people have signed up, I’ll offer all the same benefits there for the same price as Patreon.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose’s creative endeavours on the Digitiser YouTube channel, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage, fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, alternative fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Kim Justice, and blogger/YouTuber Megan Marie, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And as always, we close with a look around the WordPress community. Sorry I haven’t been too active on many of your blogs of late — working from home has a lot more possible distractions than when I’m in the office! I’ll try and do better. In the meantime, here are some shout-outs from stuff that’s caught my eye recently!

Kyoto Animation a Year Later (I drink and watch anime) – Irina looks back on one of the greatest tragedies to strike popular culture for a long time.

Video Game Characters Who Wear Masks (In Third Person) – These video game characters are still allowed in shops in the UK. Are you?

Sega gaga (Kimimi the Game-Eating She-Monster) – Kimimi looks back on one of Sega’s strangest games, and discovers that it’s a lot more than just “haha, weird”.

Deep reads #4: Playing God (The Sim series) (Everything is bad for you) – AK dives deep into Maxis’ classic series to explore where it came from, and its longstanding appeal.

Text Adventures: A Brief History of Interactive Fiction Games (Professional Moron) – Without text adventures, we might not have visual novels. So let Mr. Wapojif take you by the hand (in a completely appropriate and consensual way, obviously) and lead you on a tour of some classics from the ’70s, ’80s and beyond.

And that’s that! Please look forward to the new episode of the podcast tomorrow, and thank you, as always, for all your support of everything I do.
