short;Play: Ion Fury

I’m not so hot on them these days, but back in the ’90s I absolutely loved first-person shooters — and for me their pinnacle of pure fun factor was Ken Silverman’s Build engine.

It was with some excitement, then, that I booted up Ion Fury for the first time; this is the first Build engine game to be produced for about 20 years, and promised a somewhat different twist on the “enhanced retro” experience that is quite a popular aesthetic approach these days.

I was not disappointed. This game is like being back in the ’90s again. Join me for some foul-mouthed fun in the video below, and don’t forget to subscribe on YouTube for more.

  1. I loved Ion Fury. A lot of fantastic shooters have been coming out with a retro vibe over the last few years. New Blood Interactive has been on a roll in my opinion. DUSK was a fantastic sendup of Quake 1 and Deliverance. Amid Evil felt like a modernized blend of Heretic and Turok 2 executed on a high level. Excited to see how Ultrakill turns out (The demo was pretty great). And a much smaller indie project called HROT has a demo out on Steam. It’s apparently written in Pascal which I thought was abandoned when I was in High School. But apparently not. If you have any free time look into them. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them if you enjoyed Ion Fury.
