Around the Network

Good afternoon! I’m super-late with this one this week, I know, but the bank holiday weekend threw me off completely. Still, here we are now.

It’s been another week of lockdown, and I’ve been not-so-secretly enjoying having a government-mandated reason to stay inside, particularly now the weather’s gone A Bit Hot. I also spent most of my four-day weekend playing Final Fantasy VII Remake, which I should beat in the next couple of days and subsequently write about.

In the meantime, though, let’s look at what you might have missed last week.

Gunbarich: It’s Flippin’ Psikyonoid – The Psikyo Shooting Stars Bravo collection closes with Gunbarich, a spinoff of the Gunbird series that eschews shoot ’em up mechanics in favour of a combination of Breakout and pinball.

Boulder Dash 30th Anniversary: The Rockford Files – Boulder Dash 30th Anniversary’s mobile game roots may be a little too evident, but it’s a solid modern adaptation of an all-time classic — and there’s more on the way!

Warriors Wednesday: Grand Finale (For Now) – Warriors All-Stars #25 – Warriors Wednesday comes to a close for now as we polish off another route in Warriors All-Stars… this time with a less-than-desirable ending.

Waifu Wednesday: Viese Blanchimont – Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny’s female protagonist is, as you might expect from a Gust game, a highlight of the experience. Let’s explore this lovely young lady’s character and her place in the world.

Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories – Living a Crisis – While a bit of a shambles from a technical perspective, Granzella’s new installment in its long-running Zettai Zetsumei Toshi series is an absolutely fascinating game well worth spending some time with.

Final Fantasy Marathon: The Arcane Labyrinth, Part 1 (Final Fantasy II #15) – We’re getting close to the end of Final Fantasy II now, so it’s time to delve into the optional endgame dungeon, the Arcane Labyrinth, and see if we can’t get hold of an ultimate weapon or two.

Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny – Narrative, Themes and Characterisation – The Atelier MegaFeature continues with a look at the storytelling and worldbuilding in the second Atelier Iris game.

This week we’ve got an all-time Activision classic, an all-time pen-and-paper classic adapted to the ST, and one of the weirdest games on 2600.

Patreon and SubscribeStar

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. At the present time, this also includes exclusive patrons-only weekly vlogs and Let’s Plays at the weekends! If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just $1 a month (about 80p) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site.

I’m also in the process of getting SubscribeStar rolling for those who don’t wish to or aren’t able to use Patreon for whatever reason — I’ve had a few requests for this, so I thought I’d actually get it done. Once that’s up and running and some people have signed up, I’ll offer all the same benefits there for the same price as Patreon.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting chaotic “old men attempt to talk about games, usually fail” collective Digitiser 2000, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage, fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto and blogger/YouTuber Megan Marie, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And, as we always do, let’s stop off in the WordPress Reader for a little shenanigans and see what other people in the community have been up to!

Homebound: My Top Ten Arcade Games (The Late-Night Session) – The Night Owl shares what he’s been enjoying on his modded Arcade 1up cabinet recently.

What Makes for a Good “Comfort Game”? (In Third Person) – Jett ponders a question that is proving to be an important consideration for people all over the world right now.

I Don’t Like Taking My Handhelds Outside (The Way I Game) – Duznot shares something that I have a suspicion a fair few people may be able to relate to!

Final Fantasy VII Remake Premium Deluxe Edition Unboxing (daiyamanga.com) – Krystallina’s got a look at the shiny Premium Deluxe edition of the long-awaited game for us all to enjoy.

I Finished “Love Live: School Idol Festival” And Survived (Baud Attitude) – I didn’t even know that was possible to do, but here’s proof that with dedication, commitment and approximately six dollars, you can achieve anything!

And that’s that for another week. I’ll try and remember to do this on time this week! In the meantime, stay home, stay safe and play lots of games. If you don’t come out of the other end of this lockdown with at least one or two titles crossed off your backlog… well, it doesn’t mean anything whatsoever, but there’s never been a better time to tackle those games that have been shaming you from your shelves for months or even years!

  1. Thanks for the mention! I continue to be amazed at how much you can keep up with other blogs AND put out as much content as you do.

Glad you are enjoying the Officially Heavily Encouraged Indoor Time. I was making a dent in the backlog, really, and then it was sadly filled in thanks to all the sales that are going on at the same time.
