Around the Network

Morning all! I didn’t find time to put together the usual weekly roundup yesterday as a result of 1) cleaning up cat poop in the garden and 2) playing a game for (paid) review. But here I am now!

Patrons will know what game I’m talking about; the rest of you will hopefully see my review of it a little later this week over on Nintendo Life, plus a more in-depth write-up here on MoeGamer as has been the case with the last few games I’ve covered for them.

In the meantime, then, let’s take a look at what you might have missed last week!

MoeGamer

The MoeGamer Podcast: Episode 36 – Psikyo’s Shooting Stars – Chris and I spend a lengthy amount of time discussing Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha and Bravo in great detail. Plus the usual news and “what we’ve been playing” talk.

Gunbird: The ’90s Anime Shoot ’em Up – The Gunbird series seems pretty well-regarded as one of Psikyo’s best, so we jump in with a look at the first installment.

Waifu Wednesday: Noin – No talk of Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny would complete without a moment to appreciate the game’s wonderful redheaded tomboy.

Warriors Wednesday: A System of Headslapping (Warriors All-Stars #24) – Horo comes up with a less than brilliant plan for recovering those who are suffering with amnesia. Or is she up to something?

Gunbird 2: Peak Psikyo – If the Gunbird series in general is well-regarded, Gunbird 2 seems to be a lot of people’s absolute favourite Psikyo shooter. And it’s not hard to see why.

Final Fantasy Marathon: Reunion (Final Fantasy II #14) – With the Emperor defeated… is there anything left to do? Yes, of course there is! Tracking down an old friend, for one…

Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny: Worlds Apart The Atelier MegaFeature continues with a look at how the second Atelier Iris game handles exploration and its overall game structure.

Atari A to Z

This week we take a trip to the brick-racing, bang our heads to a “heavy metal zap game” and conclude with a visit to the Cosmic Carnival. All in a week’s work!

Patreon and SubscribeStar

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. At the present time, this also includes exclusive patrons-only weekly vlogs and Let’s Plays at the weekends! If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just $1 a month (about 80p) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site.

I’m also in the process of getting SubscribeStar rolling for those who don’t wish to or aren’t able to use Patreon for whatever reason — I’ve had a few requests for this, so I thought I’d actually get it done. Once that’s up and running and some people have signed up, I’ll offer all the same benefits there for the same price as Patreon.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting chaotic “old men attempt to talk about games, usually fail” collective Digitiser 2000, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage, fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto and blogger/YouTuber Megan Marie, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And, as always, let’s finish off with a little look around the WordPress community this week!

Let’s Talk Twintails (deluscar) – Kai provides us with an April Fool’s post that is clearly based on objective, scientific fact.

The World is Square (Kimimi the Game-Eating She-Monster) – Kimimi gives us an in-depth look at Bahamut Lagoon, the most Square game that ever was — and one we never got over here.

Can You Play a Game Wrong? (Time to Loot) – Naithin ponders his recent realisation that Animal Crossing is not a game for him, and wonders if the fact he’s supposedly “playing it wrong” is an accurate description.

Overtime, Musings and Dormant Styles (Comma Eight Comma One) – thedeviot reflects at great length and with considerable passion on the marvel that is the arena shooter. M-M-M-MULTIKILL!

Why aren’t visual novels more popular in the West? (Everything is bad for you) – AK reflects on how visual novels still have a bit of a perception problem over here… and why.

All right, that’s that. Stay safe out there… wait, no, stay safe in your own homes, don’t catch that pesky virus, play more video games. And be sure to give your favourite writers, video makers, podcasters, streamers and any other kinds of entertainers your love right now — they’re all playing an important part in keeping you sane during these difficult times.

Have as good a week as it’s possible to have under the current circumstances!
