Around the Network

Morning everyone! Sorry this is a day late once again, but it was a busy ol’ weekend recording and editing podcasts, as well as getting various bits and pieces in order.

I have a couple of days off from the day job this week, which will mostly be spent catching up on stuff that I’ll be covering over on Nintendo Life very soon, so please watch out for those articles in the next couple of weeks! Due to embargoes, I can’t talk about what those things actually are yet, but let’s just say both will be of interest to those who enjoy the stuff I cover here!

Anyway. Let’s catch up on what you might have missed in the last week. Hit the jump and join me!

Final Fantasy VII Remake Demo: Yes – Don’t worry, folks; they’ve done it right.

Strikers 1945 III: Leaving On a Jet Plane – The shift from World War II planes to modern fighter jets in this Psikyo shoot ’em up series also brings with it a monstrous increase in difficulty!

Warriors Wednesday: Redhead Tactician (Warriors All-Stars #20) – As our second playthrough gets underway, we get to grips with Sophie’s moveset and look at expanding Tamaki’s forces.

Waifu Wednesday: Veola – We look at one of Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana’s most interesting characters: Veola the magic shop owner.

Happy Birthday, PlayStation 2 – My favourite console is 20! Dear lord. I look back on some of my fondest memories of the platform’s early days.

Final Fantasy Marathon: OHKO (Final Fantasy II #10) – Can you say “overlevelled”? Well, not in Final Fantasy II you can’t — but we can one-hit KO a bunch of bosses!

Sol Divide: Blast of the Titans – Ever wanted to play a shoot ’em up that was heavily inspired by Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion monsters? Sol Divide from Psikyo will very much be your jam.

Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana – Narrative, Themes and Characterisation – We wrap up our look at Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana with an exploration of the game’s core themes and how they’re weaved into its story.

Atari A to Z

This week we have our final exploration of the dungeons of Apshai, a thoroughly weird arcade action strategy horror game for Atari ST, and a classic card game for Atari 2600.

Patreon and SubscribeStar

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. At the present time, this also includes exclusive patrons-only weekly vlogs and Let’s Plays at the weekends! If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just $1 a month (about 80p) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site.

I’m also in the process of getting SubscribeStar rolling for those who don’t wish to or aren’t able to use Patreon for whatever reason — I’ve had a few requests for this, so I thought I’d actually get it done. Once that’s up and running and some people have signed up, I’ll offer all the same benefits there for the same price as Patreon.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting chaotic “old men attempt to talk about games, usually fail” collective Digitiser 2000, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage, fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto and blogger/YouTuber Megan Marie, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And as always, we conclude with a look around the WordPress Reader to see what’s been going on this week!

50 Days of Non-Completion (Later Levels) – Kim reflects on how 50 days of streaming was both fun and frustrating.

The Play’s the Thing (This is my place.) – Fred’s creating a one-man show that sounds like it’s going to be a fascinating piece of theatre.

Breaking Out of the Box (of Politeness) (A Geeky Gal) – Megan provides some ponderings on how politeness can actually end up being our downfall sometimes.

Cilla vs. Games is back in business! (Cilla vs. Games) – It’s all Cilla’s fault that I picked up that copy of Hyperdimension Neptunia all those years ago, so you can pretty much blame her for this site’s existence. After a busy few years, it’s good to see her back and writing again!

Florence Review (In Third Person) – Jett looks at the Nintendo Switch version of Florence, an intriguing narrative-based game that makes use of its mechanics to help tell its story.

And there you have it. Right, I have some frantic gaming to get on with! I hope your Monday isn’t too… Monday-ish, and I’ll speak to you all very soon!

  1. I probably missed it in a post or video you made, but are you interested in playing the new Sakura Wars game? Now that it’s been out in Japan for a while and there’s some decent gameplay videos available, I’ve been looking into it. I’m not a big fan of Musou gameplay, but it does look like it could actually be enjoyable/good. Seems like some of the dialogue might be pretty entertaining, too.
