The MoeGamer Podcast: Episode 34 – Acid Bass, Smack Around the Face

After a mildly chaotic start to the year, we’re back with an all-new podcast, featuring my good self and Mr Chris Caskie of MrGilderPixels!

The MoeGamer Podcast is available in several places. You can subscribe to my channel on YouTube to stay up to date with both the video versions of the podcast and my weekly videos (including the Atari A to Z retro gaming series); you can follow on Soundcloud for the audio-only version of the podcast; you can subscribe via RSS to get the audio-only version of the podcast in your favourite podcast app; or you can subscribe via iTunes and listen on Spotify. Please do at least one of these if you can; it really helps us out!

Or you can just hit the jump to watch or listen to today’s episode right here on MoeGamer.

In today’s show, we kick off with a bit of a news catch-up session, taking in discussion of Little Town Hero, Touhou Spell Bubble and a variety of other recent happenings, including the announcement of the Kickstarter for The Wonderful 101 — and, perhaps most excitingly, considering the main topic of today’s episode, the confirmation that the Double Dragon & Kunio-Kun Retro Brawler Bundle is coming West.

Then we take some time to chat about what we’ve been playing recently. Chris has been hooked on Nippon Ichi’s Destiny Connect: Tick-Tock Travellers on Nintendo Switch, while I share some further thoughts on Coffee Talk and 198Xas well as talking a bit about Croixleur Sigma, a game I’ve been enjoying in one form or another since 2013.

Then finally, it’s time for the main event: a discussion of the golden age of beat ’em ups. Our discussion starts with Irem’s Kung-Fu Master and Datasoft’s Bruce Lee and continues through Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, Final Fight, King of Dragons, Asterix, the Sengoku series, Denjin Makai and its sequel Guardians before wrapping up with a bit of well-deserved adoration for Capcom’s Dungeons & Dragons games. We’re tapped out at this point, but we’ve got much more to talk about — the beat ’em up has had a bit of a revival in recent years, after all!

As always, thanks for watching and/or listening. And if you have a moment, do please take a moment to leave us a review on iTunes and/or Spotify — it really helps us out. Hope you enjoy the show!
