Around the Network

Good morning ladies and gentlemen! I’ve just enjoyed my final lie-in of my week off from the day job… not looking forward to going back to getting up when the first digit on the clock is 6. Ugh.

Anyway. It doesn’t do to dwell on that which hasn’t happened yet (though sadly I did not win the lottery last night, so it unfortunately definitely will happen) so instead it’s a good time to review what’s been going on around here.

Yes, it’s time for our weekly look at what you might have missed in the last week or so! Take my hand, and follow me beyond the jump…

Kamiko: Fighting for the Transient World We wrap up our look at Yuumi “Skipmore” Kimura’s games with Kamiko, a much more energetic action game than the rather cerebral Fairune series.

Horizon Chase Turbo: Top Gear Returns – Remember Top Gear on Super NES? Brazil most certainly does. Which is why a lot of feisty Brazilian devs are keen on modernising the experience while keeping it delightfully true to its speedy roots.

Warriors Wednesday: The Ultimate Evil (Warriors All-Stars #13) – Several incarnations of “evil” battle to discover the true definition of that concept. Gullibility, it seems…

Waifu Wednesday: Katrielle Layton – Professor Layton’s daughter is one hell of a cutie… and a delightfully realised character in her own right. If you haven’t yet explored the latest Layton game, it’s well worth your time.

My Big Sister: Blood-Red Pixels – Looking for a thought-provoking, short-form horror game to while away a couple of hours in the dark? You could do far worse than explore Stranga Games’ My Big Sister.

Final Fantasy Marathon: How to Train Your Wizard (Final Fantasy II #3) – In theory, Final Fantasy II’s progression system sees you levelling up stats that you’re directly using. But to truly get the best out of it, you need to make a bit of an effort to “specialise” your characters a bit… Maria! You’re a Black Mage now!

LAMUNATION!: Welcome to Youkoso Saint Aria – The Cover Game on White Powder and Love Lab’s unusual visual novel LAMUNATION! continues with an overview of what this nonsense is actually all about, plus a closer look at the character Lamune’s narrative path.

This week, I attempt to treat illnesses like a certain portly plumber would, enjoy a rather late rip-off and return to the enchanted forest to blast yet more bugs.

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. At the present time, this also includes exclusive patrons-only weekly vlogs and Let’s Plays at the weekends! If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just $1 a month (about 80p) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting chaotic “old men attempt to talk about games, usually fail” collective Digitiser 2000, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage and fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And you should also be keeping an eye on Normal Happenings this year, since they’re playing host to an ambitious collaborative blogging project that I’m a part of: The Characters That Define Us! This week, we’ve seen a great article on Roger Wilco from Space Quest… and an accompanying Super Mario Maker 2 course for those who want to take their enjoyment to a whole other level. Thanks to Matt for all his hard work on this awesome collab.

Anyway. What else has been going on around the WordPress community this week? I must confess, during my week off from the day job I haven’t been keeping super up-to-date with what everyone’s been up to because I’ve been busily creating! But here’s some stuff that caught my eye anyway:

Monkey paw wishes (Kimimi the Game-Eating She-Monster) – It wouldn’t be a Sunday without a link to a Kimimi post about a game a lot of you probably haven’t heard of, would it? This time she explores Shadow Tower: Abyss, and gets a little confused by the idea that “better” isn’t always… better?

Does It Matter If An Anime is More Style Than Substance? (100 Word Anime) – Karandi kicks off the new season of anime with a discussion on whether an anime simply being impressive to look at is enough to warrant a watch — or if there should be something a bit more going on to maintain your attention.

What I Learnt from Cautious Hero (Writing Tips) (The Otaku Author) – Lynn ponders the recent Cautious Hero: The Hero is Overpowered but Overly Cautious anime and what he’s learned from it… particularly with regard to how he can use some of his observations in his own writing.

Banking on Nostalgia: First Impressions of Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition (Adventure Rules) – It’s kind of impressive quite how long Baldur’s Gate and its surrounding games have endured over the years. Robert Ian Shepard takes a look at the recent rerelease of Neverwinter Nights. Is it worthwhile to play this on console… or are you best served continuing to enjoy the old PC version?

OverBlood: UnderBlood (Hundstrasse) – Wombling free! Do you like survival horror games that no-one has ever heard of, with good reason? Then you might enjoy this account of an experience that is akin to “manoeuvring a fridge around the game”.

All righty. That’s your lot for this week. As always, thanks for all your support. Please do continue to enjoy everything on MoeGamer — and feel free to share anything you particularly like on social media, even if it’s an “old” post. I write everything here so that people can enjoy it at any time, so if you find an older post talking about a favourite game and want to share it — please do!

And don’t forget you can get exclusive content as well as helping the site grow and thrive by signing up for my Patreon. Or you can flip me a one-off “tip” either via Ko-Fi or PayPal if you’re that way inclined. Every little helps me pay for site expenses, acquire new games and invest in new hardware!

Have a lovely week, and think of me tomorrow morning as I’m getting up in the dark once again to drag my sorry arse to the dreary old day job…
