Around the Network

Hello everyone, hope you’ve been having a good weekend. Mine has been fairly uneventful so far, which I guess is a good thing.

It’s officially December now, so you’re all allowed to put your Christmas decorations up. The MoeGamer Awards will be starting shortly alongside the Pokémon Sword and Shield feature, so please be sure to stop by this post and leave some ideas for award categories if you haven’t already. The more the merrier!

Anyway, let’s check out what you might have missed this week.

MoeGamer

Old School Musical: Tapping Through Time – Old School Musical is a really cool rhythm game that pays homage to a wide variety of video games from days gone by through its glorious visuals. Highly recommended, particularly for handheld play on Switch.

Summer Daze at Hero-U: Corey Cole Talks Kickstarter, Characters As Puzzles and More – I had the good fortune to be able to chat with Corey “Quest for Glory” Cole about the upcoming project he’s working on with his wife Lori Ann, and how it’s drawn influence from visual novels, JRPGs and dating sims.

Warriors Wednesday: The Mysterious Book – Rio’s back in the leading role as we take on a series of new challenges in the sixth episode of our ongoing Warriors All-Stars playthrough. But who is the mysterious silver-haired girl with a seemingly exhaustive knowledge of alchemy?

Waifu Wednesday: Sword and Shield’s Pokégirls Sword and Shield have some of the finest Pokégirls in recent history, so let’s celebrate some of them!

Plus-Sized Elf, Vol. 1: Fantasy, Fries and Fitness – Another look at a manga volume. This time it’s the first volume of Synecdoche’s comedy romp about a wide variety of fantasy species seeking help for their weight problems.

Final Fantasy Marathon: Remember to Save Your Work – We reach the bottom of Lifespring Grotto at last, only to discover exactly why people regard the Final Fantasy V-inspired bosses in here are the toughest opponents in the whole game. Judicious saving saved the day!

Pokémon Sword and Shield: Introduction and History – I’ve been meaning to explore the history of the Pokémon series for a long time now. So here, I do. At great length.

Atari A to Z

This week we’ve got one of the most gratuitously violent games ever (well, from 1983, anyway), a 16-bit port of a well-regarded 8-bit shoot ’em up, and a 10 out of 10 Atari 2600 game from 1978. Not a bad crop!

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. At the present time, this also includes exclusive patrons-only weekly vlogs on Saturdays! If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just $1 a month (about 80p) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting chaotic “old men attempt to talk about games, usually fail” collective Digitiser 2000, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage and fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And, as always, we conclude today with a look around the WordPress Reader for posts that have caught my attention this week. As always, if you have any gaming, anime, manga or general nerdery blogs you think I should be following, be sure to let me know! I’m always up for new things to read.

Blood on the Dance Floor Retrospective: Evolution (Lethargic Ramblings) – I featured Leth’s retrospective last week, but he’s putting so much effort and passion into this project it’s worth highlighting again. He’s going through the entire discography of one of the most despised bands of all time and highlighting exactly what he likes about it. I approve of this sort of thing!

Beginner’s guide to indie (2019): part one (Later Levels) – Kim’s a big fan of the indie gaming scene, so here she presents the first part of an extensive look at some of the best it has to offer.

Awful People Can Still Be Great Characters (I drink and watch anime) – I agree wholeheartedly with this fine post from Irina.

Introducing: A Very Geeky Christmas (A Geeky Gal) – Megan has some great gift ideas for the various types of geek and nerd in your life. Be sure to follow her for more helpful lists of suggestions every Friday!

The End Game (Git Gud at Life) – Michael is packing up his current blog project… but it’s not the end. Instead, he’s folding what he’s done to date into a larger, more ambitious project — check out what he’s got planned, and be sure to follow it!

That’s your lot, then. I’m off to drink coffee, eat flapjacks and maybe record some videos. Don’t forget to submit your award suggestions for The MoeGamer 2019 Awards, otherwise I have to make a bunch of stuff up and you won’t like it!

Have a lovely weekend and, as always, thank you for all your ongoing support. Mwah mwah etc.

Thanks for reading; I hope you enjoyed this article. I’ve been writing about games in one form or another since the days of the old Atari computers, with work published in Page 6/New Atari User, PC Zone, the UK Official Nintendo Magazine, GamePro, IGN, USgamer, Glixel and more over the years, and I love what I do.

If you’d like to support the site and my work on it, please consider becoming a Patron — click here or on the button below to find out more about how to do so. From just $1 a month, you can get access to daily personal blog updates and exclusive members’ wallpapers featuring the MoeGamer mascots.

If you want to show one-off support, you can also buy me a coffee using Ko-Fi or PayPal.
