Around the Network

Good evening! Another week draws to a close, we’re a week closer to Christmas and Pokémon is out! Truly, the festive season begins here. Probably.

We’ve got one more week to run on our current feature exploring Shade’s games Bullet Girls Phantasia and Gun Gun Pixies, and then I will likely continue to explore the former’s substantial postgame in an upcoming (possibly irregular) video series, so please look forward to that. From there, we’re looking forward to a bit of Pokémon funtimes, plus the now-traditional MoeGamer Awards for December.

Before we get to all that, though, let’s see what you might have missed this week.

MoeGamer

House of Golf: Tabletop Tee-Off – Fancy a game of minigolf in various housebound environments? This Switch game from ex-Psygnosis staffers will be right on your fairway.

Kero Blaster: Amphibious Assault – Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya’s games are one-of-a-kind experiences, with his homage to Contra providing a markedly distinct feel to his more well-known classic Cave Story.

Warriors Wednesday: Who’s That Girl – You know how sometimes you see someone you recognise but you can’t remember their name for the life of you? That happened, only with a Dead or Alive girl. Sorry, Honoka.

Waifu Wednesday: Pokégirls, Vol. 2 – With Pokémon Sword and Shield out this week, it seemed like a fine time to revisit one of my favourite aspects of the series: its character designs!

Bullet Girls Phantasia: The Art of Erotica – Remember a while back where I said we all need to get better at talking about sex? Here’s my contribution to the cause, looking at Bullet Girls Phantasia’s erotic component in detail.

Final Fantasy Marathon: The Fires of Hell – The Warriors of Light’s adventure through the world of Final Fantasy I continues with the second “Soul of Chaos” dungeon, Hellfire Chasm.

I Want Your Help with the MoeGamer 2019 Awards! – Topic. Read this piece, then leave a comment on it (not here!) if you have some suitable suggestions for me. Looking forward to your input!

Atari A to Z

It’s a fairly cerebral week all round, as we have typing practice on the Atari 8-bit, ancient Oriental board games on the ST and “fun” with numbers on the Atari 2600.

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. At the present time, this also includes exclusive patrons-only weekly vlogs on Saturdays! If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just $1 a month (about 80p) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting chaotic “old men attempt to talk about games, usually fail” collective Digitiser 2000, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, the wonderfully supportive Normal Happenings, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage and fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And, as always, we wrap things up with a look around the WordPress blogs I follow to see some things that have caught my eye recently. If I’m not following you and you think I should be, please let me know! I’m always up for new reading material during boring periods at the day job. (There are lots of boring periods at the day job.)

The kindness of bloggers (Later Levels) – In these days of increasing negativity and horrible nonsense going on, it’s important to acknowledge and celebrate when nice things happen — so that’s exactly what Kim does here.

Old doesn’t mean ugly. Nor does it mean you stop trying new things. (This is my place.) – Fred explores how we should try and let go of the idea of “bodily perfection” and instead celebrate people of all shapes and ages. And this philosophy can be applied more broadly to all sorts of aspects of life, too.

A byte-sized blue blur (Kimimi the Game-Eating She-Monster) – Kimimi’s going through some difficult times right now, so please go say some nice and supportive words to her… and read this great piece about an infrequently seen handheld entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

Taking the Tarrasque Seriously (GeekOut UK) – The tarrasque, the monster with the highest challenge rating in all of D&D, is a running joke among me and my friends. But what if you took it seriously? How might you be able to actually integrate it into a campaign? Terraphi explores the possibilities.

The Bizarre, Warped Reality of Five Starcle Men (Lethargic Ramblings) – Having been on hiatus for a while, Leth has found a bunch of inspiration recently from exploring underappreciated and oft-maligned music. We begin with a look at the very strange tale of Five Starcle Men.

That’s your lot! I’m off to eat pizza and play Pokémon. Have a lovely evening and, as always, thank you for all your support. Love you!

Thanks for reading; I hope you enjoyed this article. I’ve been writing about games in one form or another since the days of the old Atari computers, with work published in Page 6/New Atari User, PC Zone, the UK Official Nintendo Magazine, GamePro, IGN, USgamer, Glixel and more over the years, and I love what I do.
