Around the Network

Happy Sunday everyone! Apologies for the quietness of the weekend just passed (including a lack of an Atari A to Z Flashback video) — I spent yesterday at Digitiser Live in London, so didn’t have much time to do anything else!

It was a really great day. If you’d like to find out more, check out my daily personal blog over on Patreon; suffice to say it was a pretty magical experience, and I’m glad I took the time to go and see that shambolic nonsense. Normal business will resume this week!

So, with that out of the way, let’s take a look at what you might have missed this week, then.

MoeGamer

The MoeGamer Podcast: Episode 25 – WTF Space Tarantulas – Chris and I take some time to explore the SNK 40th Anniversary collection and pick out some of the highlights. Plus the usual news and “what we’ve been playing” segments.

The Zelda Diaries: Part 4 – Peace and Quiet – I reflect on how The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild allows a pleasingly convincing sensation of “getting back to nature” through its excellent use of atmosphere created with music and sound.

Warriors Wednesday: Overly Ambitious – “Ah, this is pretty easy,” I thought, starting up the Wei campaign with my 100+ levels of passive abilities unlocked. “I should try Hard mode.” I should not have tried Hard mode.

Waifu Wednesday: Jessica de Alkirk – It’s time for an all-time classic female character in this week’s Waifu Wednesday, with Jessica de Alkirk from the first Lunar game.

How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?: Moe-Tivational – I finally got around to watching some anime again. And it turns out I made a very good choice for the first one to watch. See you at the gym!

Sega Ages: OutRun – Chasing the Horizon – OutRun has, at this point, been ported to more systems than even the original Final Fantasy and Ys games, so how does the latest Nintendo Switch version stack up?

Final Fantasy Marathon: The Slumbering Prince – The Warriors of Light continue their quest, stopping by Elfheim only to discover that their prince is having a bit of trouble sleeping. Sleeping too much, that is.

NES Essentials: Wrecking Crew – One of Mario’s more underappreciated adventures, and a pretty underappreciated title in the NES’ library generally, Wrecking Crew is an all-time favourite puzzle game that swaps the portly plumber’s usual arcade action for strategic planning.

Atari A to Z

Only two this week, I’m afraid, as I didn’t get time to finish an Atari A to Z Flashback video this weekend. We’ll be back on schedule next week, though! In the meantime, enjoy some public domain arcade fun from a beloved Atari 8-bit programmer, and one of the best ever examples of French weirdness.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting chaotic “old men (and Octav1us Kitten) attempt to talk about games, usually fail” collective Digitiser 2000, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, the wonderfully supportive Normal Happenings, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage and fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of recent YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And here’s a bunch of hand-picked goodness written by the good folks on WordPress this week:

Back…..from the grave……. (Raistlin0903) – Raistlin is an immensely positive force in our little corner of the WordPress community, but has been absent for a while having been dealing with all manner of personal issues. Now he’s back, though, so please be sure to give him a warm “welcome back” and enjoy his new posts!

Why the hell are you here, Teacher!? (Season One) (Ecchi Hunter) – Ecchi Hunter has been going from strength to strength with its episodic reviews and honest reactions to various ecchi shows. Why the hell are you here, Teacher!? is a highly entertaining, extremely dumb show, and Lynn here does a great job of explaining its appeal.

Eva Dub Talk and 5 Shows That I Would Rather Not Be Redubbed (Mechanical Anime Reviews) – Scott runs through some examples of dubbed anime that are just fine the way they are, thank you very much.

Kyoto Animation didn’t deserve this. (Lumi Reviews Things) – The tragedy that befell anime studio Kyoto Animation this week was absolutely heartbreaking; more than 30 people have lost their lives and countless irreplaceable works of art have been lost. Lumi reflects on his feelings about the situation.

Dear Kyoto Animation (Lethargic Ramblings) – This was such an impactful moment that I wanted to include a couple of the heartfelt pieces on the subject that really touched me this week. Here’s Leth’s letter to the fallen studio and what they meant to him.

That’s a bit of a downer to end on, I know, but it’s important to talk about — and if you feel like you’ve been affected by the situation, it’s important to explore and express your feelings, too. We’ve lost something very important.

Have a good week.

  1. Thank you so much Pete, for the kind words and the support. I’m very happy to be back and have been having a lot of fun so far ever since my return. The support has really been overwhelming. Thank you again! 😊

  2. Thank you for mentioning my post about KyoAni here. Spreading awareness about this tragedy and what we can do to help is one of the best things we can do to help them heal in this time of need.

On a more positive note, thanks for rounding up so much good stuff again this week. I have lots of catching up to do as always!

And as usual, I’ll be tuning into the MoeGamer podcast at work tomorrow 😀
