Around the Network

G’day folks, and happy Easter! I hope you’re all having a suitably pleasant day, filled with however you choose to celebrate, if at all.

I write this after a delicious roast lamb lunch, and although the wife and I are still technically dieting, I’m pretty sure we can find a bit of room for some chocolate later. It’s what the Lord would have wanted.

Anyway! Let’s crack on with our usual rundown of what you might have missed this week, shall we?

Sunday Shooting: Cardinal Sins – Judgement Silversword’s spin-off title features entertaining and tricky “challenge-style” gameplay rather than conventional shooting, and it’s an absolute blast.

The MoeGamer Podcast: Episode 20 – He’s Not an Ant – Chris and I reconvene to talk about the latest gaming news, what we’ve been playing lately and our big topic for the day; this time around it’s the turn of early 2D mascot platformers.

Delving Into Air Combat #1 – Kicking off a new Delving Into series with a first look at the origin of the Ace Combat series — it’s Air Combat on the original PlayStation.

Warriors Wednesday: Honour, Hojo and Halberds – The Shu people are tasked with saving the Hojo clan before they defect to Orochi’s forces. Can they obtain some valuable new allies?

Waifu Wednesday: Ginchiyo Tachibana – This formidable woman has been the backbone of my Shu team in Warriors Orochi so far, so I thought I’d show her a bit of love.

PS2 Essentials: Sky Odyssey – This is one of those PS2 games that I picked up for 50p on a whim a while back, only to discover that it’s a real gem of a game that everyone should give a shot. Check it out!

New Game Plus: End of Summer – The summer days draw to a close in the lands of Arland, and Rorona still has work to do. Is there no rest for the young alchemist?

Sonic the Hedgehog: Erinaceidae of Colour We pick up where we left off with the Sonic the Hedgehog Cover Game feature from last year with a look back at one of his most well-received modern installments: Sonic Colours for Wii.

Atari A to Z

This week we’ve had an unreleased Atari 8-bit port of an unreleased Sega arcade game, a painfully slow early 3D racing simulation with a tenuous link to a popular movie of the time, and one of the earliest vector graphics games. Plenty of fun to be had!

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

I am a proud Patron of Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose, the Cheap Show podcast and The Game Chasers, because all of them put out great content that is worth your support. The Game Chasers are working on a movie, too; be sure to check out their Kickstarter if you’re a fan.

Check out some examples of what these fine folks have been up to here:

And, as always, let’s take a quick trip around the WordPress Reader to see some things that have caught my attention recently!

The Modern Loli and The Importance of Being Earnest (I drink and watch anime) – Irina always comes up with some good discussion points when she, as she puts it, “pretends to know things”. This time around it’s the turn of that most controversial character archetype to get some analysis: the loli.

Eastshade: picture perfect (Later Levels) – Kim found an interesting looking game that focuses on the pleasant exploration aspects of open-world games rather than wafty combat and broken progression systems. Eastshade sounds like a blissfully calming game — just the thing for a tough week.

We Are Here (Normal Happenings) – My heart goes out to Matt and Nikki as they deal with the loss of their second beloved furry friend in the space of four months. Loss can lead to the very foundations of your thinking being shaken up somewhat; Matt reflects on that here.

Super Mario All Stars 1-Up Mushroom (MrGilderPixels) – My podcasting partner in crime has put together another excellent “pixel painting”, this time of the colourful 1-up mushroom from Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES. Check out his work — and perhaps commission him! — at his site.

Berserk Deluxe Edition Manga Preview (BiblioNyan) – If you’re going to jump into a long-running and rather daunting series… you might as well do it with a gorgeous edition!

Well, that’s that for another week! I hope you have a pleasant Easter break, if indeed you get one, and that either the April blizzards or unseasonably warm weather isn’t getting to you too much. Here’s to another week of happy gaming!
