Cardinal Sins, also known as Judgement Silversword Recycle Edition, is a remix of Judgement Silversword into a different style of shoot ’em up. Rather than simply working your way through stages and trying to survive as long as possible, here you’re challenged with a variety of different objectives, each loosely themed around the Seven Deadly Sins.

I like this game a lot. It’s a really fun twist on the conventional shoot ’em up formula, and would pave the way for similar “objective-based” takes on the genre in later years such as Triangle Service’s Shmups Skills Test.
Probably its most impressive aspect is how it makes good use of pretty much the exact same graphical and sound assets as Judgement Silversword to produce something that “feels” very different. And technically it’s free, too, though if you want to take advantage of the original free release you’ll either need a WonderSwan Color with a WonderWitch, or a suitable emulator. For those of us willing to pay for convenience, you can also find it as part of the Ginga Force and Eschatos Wonder Pack on Xbox 360, or on Steam.
