Around the Network

Good day, friends! It’s time once again for another round-up post.

I’m trying desperately not to think about the fact I have to go back to the day job tomorrow after two wonderful weeks off, but at least I can do so with the confidence that I’ve got a lot of things prepped and ready for the coming weeks.

Hmm, no, that’s not really helping… I want my lie-ins! Oh well. Let’s see what you might have missed this week before I get too sad.

Sunday Shooting: Judgement Silversword – If you liked Eschatosit’s worth taking a look at where its roots are: a cool WonderSwan Color blaster called Judgement Silversword.

SNK Essentials: Psycho Soldier – Athena’s name is magic, mystery is what you see. Her crystal is the answer, fighting fair, to keep us fr– sorry, what were you saying?

PS2 Essentials: Fitness Fun – Simple 2000 series time! Hooray! This time around it’s an unusual rhythm game featuring ever-present series mascot Riho Futaba strutting her sweaty stuff to a variety of beats.

Warriors Wednesday: Spirits of Sanada Ghosts ruin everything… especially when they’re not actually there. The Shu people find this out the hard way when they find themselves pit against Yukimura Sanada in this week’s dive into Warriors Orochi.

Waifu Wednesday: Is Malon or Saria the Best Legend of Zelda Waifu? – I try not to clickbait when at all possible, but this question came up multiple times in my “most searched terms” this week, so I thought I’d have a crack at actually answering it. I hope whoever asked it repeatedly found what they were looking for.

Upcoming Plans – A rundown of what’s coming up next on MoeGamer. Check it out!

Boom Boom Rocket – One of my favourite games from Bizarre Creations, and one not a lot of people remember, Boom Boom Rocket is a great game to chill out with.

New Game Plus: Beat the Heat – Our New Game Plus adventures in Atelier Rorona DX continue as we attempt to beat the heat in the height of summer.

Atari A to Z

Another week of very disparate titles across the three platforms! On 8-bit we have a Jeff Minter classic about mowing the lawn, on ST we have a classic first-person 3D puzzler, and from Atari Flashback Classics we have “reverse Missile Command”.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

I am a proud Patron of Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose, the Cheap Show podcast and The Game Chasers, because all of them put out great content that is worth your support. The Game Chasers are working on a movie, too; be sure to check out their Kickstarter if you’re a fan.

Check out some examples of what these fine folks have been up to here:

I was also very sad to hear that Dave will be departing Game Sack from the next full episode in a couple of weeks’ time. The show will be continuing without him in the future, only fronted exclusively by Joe. It’s an end of an era, for sure, and he will be missed — but when you need to get your work-life balance in order, it’s important to have your priorities straight.

All right. Howsabout some highlights from around the WordPress Reader to polish off the week with, then?

I just played, like, 75 hours of Fire Emblem (Baud Attitude) – Baud has been educating himself of a variety of Nintendo franchises, and the latest is Fire Emblem. I think he liked it.

11 Games I Loved But Never Finished (gamergal.exe) – We’ve all been there: got thoroughly invested in a game, but for one reason or another never saw it through to its conclusion. Skylar-Mei has some great choices, and this feature also kicks off a cool new regular feature on her site!

Top 5 Silly Things I Used to Believe About Anime (I drink and watch anime) – I could relate to a few of these. And I can probably make similar lists about all manner of things! But this one is Irina’s, so enjoy it.

April’s Used Books Haul: Japanese Literature (BiblioNyan) – Doubtless of interest to a few readers here, NekoNyan recently found themself in possession of a variety of intriguing-looking Japanese publications. Be sure to stop by and leave a comment if you’re interested in seeing some more in-depth articles about them!

Special Features presents: A new hope?? (Raistlin0903) – Regular readers will recognise Raistlin’s name from a previous Around the Network post, and it’s great to see him writing something more substantial again. This time he offers some thoughts as a Star Wars fan burned by the recent movies — and what the next one might have to offer.

All right. That’ll do for now. Have a great week, everyone, and spare a bit of sympathy for me having to get up early again!

  1. Thanks for the mention! I may be nearing the end of my experimentation – at this point I think I’m down to mostly 2d platformer series, and that’s not a genre I’ve ever got on with very well.

Glad to hear you had a couple of weeks off the daily grind! I’ve been enjoying all of the Jeff Minter love in your retrospectives. His Vic-20 games were a big part of my younger years.

Hopefully you’re not too buried under work when you get back. I always lose the first day to just catching up on the ridiculous number of emails that can accumulate. 🙂

  2. Thankyou for the mention! I’m super excited to continue the series!

Hope you enjoyed your time off and managed to settle back into your day job. It’s horrible trying to catch up after a few days off, never mind two weeks.
