Atari A to Z: Gridrunner

It’s time to pay another visit to the strange and wonderful world of Jeff Minter… albeit with one of his least strange games.

It may not be particularly peculiar compared to some of his other work, but Gridrunner is still a classic shooter from his back catalogue, drawing some inspiration from Centipede and building on the formula.

It’s hard though. Or I’m just rubbish. No, that can’t be it, it is the game that is hard!

  1. Funny… In all its incarnations I had never thought about Gridrunner’s similarities to Centipede until you mentioned it. Now it all makes sense. 🙂

    1. It actually didn’t occur to me back in the day either… but looking back from a modern perspective, a lot of Minter’s stuff consisted of attempts to improve on established formulae. I was very surprised when I saw The Empire Strikes Back on 2600 for the first time and thought “hang on, this is just Attack of the Mutant Camels, isn’t it?”
