Around the Network

I’m officially on holiday! Well, from the day job, anyway. That means you can expect lots of fun things around here and over on YouTube over the course of the next couple of weeks and beyond. Hoorah!

I hope you’ve had a pleasant week. Spring has sprung here, so the weather’s a bit nicer, the days are a bit brighter and the overall “mood” of things seems to have lifted somewhat; blessed relief after a rather bleak-feeling winter, to be sure.

To cheer you up further, let’s check out what you might have missed this week!

Sunday Driving: Out With a Bang (Finale) – Split/Second finally comes to an end with an explosive finale… and a bit of a surprise that may, sadly, never be resolved…

Special Announcement: The MoeGamer Compendium, Volume 1 – I made a book! It compiles together all of the Cover Game features from 2016 and is rather lovely. Check out this post if you’d like to find out a few more details and maybe get a copy for yourself!

SNK Essentials: Fantasy – One of early-era SNK’s most peculiar games, Fantasy is an interesting early example of a narrative-based game, with a variety of different gameplay styles along the way. And riveting dialogue.

Racer Essentials: Split/Second – With the Split/Second playthrough at an end, I thought I’d reflect on the game as a whole. So I did!

Warriors Wednesday: One Foxy Lady – The Shu campaign in Warriors Orochi continues apace as we run into the biggest man-whore in Sengoku-era Japan. Which is probably quite an achievement.

Waifu Wednesday: Clea Glaive – A look at one of Death end re;Quest’s core cast members — an ogre with an attitude, who is more interested in kicking you in your coinpurse than your… uh… well, the other kind of coinpurse.

Shmup Essentials: Exzeal – While Triangle Service may not be a household name in shoot ’em ups, they’ve put out some really fun titles over the years. One such example is Exzeal.

New Game Plus: Vultures-B-Gone – Rorona’s next assignment in our New Game Plus run of her self-titled Atelier game is to clear out some vultures from the Nearby Forest. Time to get creative!

Delving Into Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition #6 – I assemble some helpful tips and tricks I’ve determined over my time with Ambition Mode in Koei Tecmo’s delightful hack-and-slash.

This week, we have an impressively speedy game from English Software, a classic isometric adventure and a game that was responsible for a ton of blistered palms in the late ’70s. A good mix, no?

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

I am, as you probably know by now, a proud Patron of Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose, the Cheap Show podcast and The Game Chasers, because all of them put out great content that is worth your support. The Game Chasers are working on a movie, too; be sure to check out their Kickstarter if you’re a fan.

Check out some examples of what these fine folks have been up to here:

And, of course, it wouldn’t be a roundup post without a dive into my WordPress Reader to see what my fellow community members have been up to, would it?

My Oddly Specific Let’s Play Tastes (Adventure Rules) – Robert Ian Shepard shares his thoughts on the Let’s Play medium and what he finds appealing in the work of the creators he’s found himself drawn to. Good food for thought if you’re considering dipping your toes into YouTube’s filthy waters, to mix metaphors.

The Difficulty With Difficulty (Kimimi the Game-Eating She-Monster) – Kimimi’s post this week concerns the difficulty of games, with a particular look at Devil May Cry 5. How can creators balance their games so that they offer a stiff challenge for those who demand it, yet still remain accessible?

The Importance of Finding Game Reviews and Coverage from Sources You Trust and Can Connect With (In Third Person) – Jett has some thoughts on the importance of finding ga– you know what, the title says it all, and Jett makes some excellent points, so go read this!

Breaking the silence… (Raistlin0903) – Raistlin is one of the most pleasant, positive influences on the whole WordPress community, or at least our little anime-themed corner of it, anyway. He’s been going through some tough times recently so we haven’t seen as much of him around as we’d like. Go show the man a bit of moral support, he’s one of the good ones.

PayDay 2: In Defence of My Gaming Guilty Pleasure… or Maybe I’m Just a Terrible Person (Hundstrasse) – Hundstrasse explores that feeling you get when you enjoy something that you perhaps “shouldn’t”. Is this something to feel guilty about, or is it something we should embrace wholeheartedly as a safe means of exploring fantasies?

That’s that for this week. New podcast episode coming tomorrow, and it’s a great one!

Thanks, as always, for all your support both here and on YouTube. And don’t forget to check out my book! Link in the footer. Ja ne!

  1. Aww man….I just woke up and checking in on WordPress this is one of the first things I see. Seriously this is so kind of you to do. It’s one of those rare instances where I seem to be at a loss for words, as pretty much anything I say seems to be too less. But really: thank you for this amazing shout out, and remember: you are one of the good ones yourself! Enjoy your holiday! 😊😊
