Around the Network

Another week has passed! This one seems to have gone by quite quickly for some reason. I’m not complaining; I have a couple of weeks off from the day job at the beginning of April, and I’m very much looking forward to using that time for a bunch of MoeGamer and YouTube stuff.

In the meantime, though, things have been continuing as usual around here, with plenty of things to read, watch and listen to.

So let’s take a look at what you might have missed this week!

MoeGamer

Sunday Driving: Scorching Rubber – We’re well past the halfway point in Split/Second now, and getting access to some of the faster cars. Also burps. Lots of burps.

The MoeGamer Podcast: Episode 18 – Beakf*cker Gets Horizontal – Chris and I reconvene for another episode of The MoeGamer Podcast, this time around with horizontally scrolling shoot ’em ups under the microscope, along with the usual mix of news and thoughts on what we’ve been playing lately.

Delving Into Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition #5 – We continue our extended deep-dive into Dynasty Warriors 8 etc etc with a look at Ambition mode, a sprawling metagame that complements the main story mode and unlocks access to a variety of new mechanics.

Warriors Wednesday: Wu Warriors vs Orochi – It’s time for the final battle! This time around, the Wu bros (and sis… and dad… and friends) get together in an attempt to take down Orochi once and for all. Who will prevail? Well, I think you know, although the path to victory is, as ever, anything but smooth…

Waifu Wednesday: Maria Osawa – We bid 428: Shibuya Scramble a fond farewell from the Cover Game spotlight with a spoileriffic exploration of one of my favourite characters in the whole thing.

Death end re;Quest: Introduction – And with that, it’s on to a new Cover Game feature! This time around it’s Idea Factory and Compile Heart’s Death end re;Quest, an unusual horror RPG from its Galapagos RPG project. Let’s take a look at where it draws inspiration from…

New Game Plus: Cabbage Girl – Our second playthrough of Atelier Rorona DX continues with the finale of the first year, including the annual festival and the cabbagey goodness that brings with it!

SNK 40th Anniversary Collection: (Almost) Perfect Preservation – The wonderful SNK 40th Anniversary Collection from SNK and Digital Eclipse almost gets everything so, so right… but falters (at least in its Switch incarnation) with something that is going to prove to be the absolute enemy of archival and preservation in the years to come!

Atari A to Z

Three fun picks this week, including an early sighting (hearing?) of George “The Fat Man” Sanger, beloved of ’90s PC gamers everywhere; a classic vertically scrolling shoot ’em up; and another simple yet addictive title from the Atari arcade archives.

Don’t forget there’s a fully indexed, searchable archive of all the Atari A to Z videos on the official site!

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

As always, I’d like to take a moment to note that I’m a proud Patron of Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose, the Cheap Show podcast and The Game Chasers, because all of them put out great content that is worth your support. The Game Chasers are working on a movie, too; be sure to check out their Kickstarter if you’re a fan.

Check out some examples of what these fine folks have been up to here:

And, as is tradition at this point (according to the URL I’ve been doing this weekly post for nearly half a year now, so I’d say that counts as a “tradition!”) here’s a selection of things that have caught my eye on WordPress this week.

Mazinger Z Pixel Head (MrGilderPixels) – My dear friend and podcasting partner in crime Chris Caskie has been hard at work on some new projects, with this latest piece of pixel art being the newest one he’d like you all to see. Check it out, the man’s got a talent.

Target Audience Matters: The Anthem Problem (DJMMT’s Gaming & More Blog) – DJMMT poses an interesting and plausible theory for why Anthem might be suffering so much in terms of popular and critical reception. Besides the reports of it bricking people’s PS4s, I mean, obviously.

Announcement: Snail Mail Inkling Club (Normal Happenings) – Matt at Normal Happenings is one of the kindest, most supportive people in the whole WordPress community, so I’m happy to share his latest Patreon incentive — it involves letters. Actual letters! If you fancy getting some post that might stoke the fires of creativity, read on…

Metacognition: Burnout (AmbiGaming) – Athena ponders the idea of gaming burnout, and how and why it might happen. Have you found yourself burnt out on something you thought you loved? You might find a few answers — or at least some support and understanding — here!

Video Games: More than Movies? (Later Levels) – The ever-prolific Kim at Later Levels examines the video game medium and asks whether we should be comparing it to movies or treating it as something altogether unique.

If you have a blog that I’m not following that you think I should be following, please feel free to let me know in the comments, or drop me a follow here on WordPress; I typically follow back everyone who follows MoeGamer or Atari A to Z.

And that’s that for another week. As always, thank you so much for your support, whether it’s through simple reading, liking, commenting, following or sharing on social media, or if you’ve taken that next step to support independent games writing by dropping me a one-off donation on Ko-Fi or an ongoing pledge on Patreon.

Every single bit of financial support — whether it’s a single dollar or the price of a game or piece of hardware — means the world to me, and helps keep MoeGamer, my YouTube projects and Atari A to Z up and running.

As do your kind eyes taking some time out from your day to read or watch the things I’ve been creating. If financial support isn’t practical or possible for you right now, be sure to just leave a like or a comment, or say hi on either of my Twitter accounts. It’s always great to hear from people who are enjoying my work!

With that, then, have a lovely week!

Thanks for reading; I hope you enjoyed this article. I’ve been writing about games in one form or another since the days of the old Atari computers, with work published in Page 6/New Atari User, PC Zone, the UK Official Nintendo Magazine, GamePro, IGN, USgamer, Glixel and more over the years, and I love what I do.

If you’d like to support the site and my work on it, please consider becoming a Patron — click here or on the button below to find out more about how to do so. From just $1 a month, you can get access to daily personal blog updates and exclusive members’ wallpapers featuring the MoeGamer mascots.
