Around the Network

Happy weekend, friends! I hope you’ve had a good week. I’ve had a bizarrely busy one, though I’m not entirely sure how or why. I just don’t seem to have had much time to do anything.

Anyway, it’s the weekend, so it’s that time again: time for a roundup of all the things you might have missed out on this week. This week marks the end of the Cover Game feature on 428: Shibuya Scrambleso be sure to check that out in its entirety if you haven’t just yet — it’s a fabulous game, and I really enjoyed writing about it.

For now though… time to look back before we look forward!

Sunday Driving: Cleaning Up – No-one likes getting covered in poo, especially when you’re driving a fancy sports car. I hear explosions get those stains right out, though.

What’s in the Box: Death End Re;Quest Limited Edition – This is the next Cover Game feature on the site, so I thought I’d get started early with a look at the new limited edition from Idea Factory International. It’s lovely, as always from these fine folks.

Seven Arbitrarily Chosen Things You’re Missing Out On If You’ve Been Operating Under the Mistaken Belief That JRPGs are “Dead” – The clue’s in the title really. This piece wasn’t really “triggered” by anything in particular, but it’s something I’ve had on my mind for a while. Now seemed like a good time to extract it from my mind and put it on the page for your enjoyment! Please do feel free to share with any of your friends who believe there haven’t been any JRPGs since the PS1 era.

Warriors Wednesday: Learn Through Pain – Tadakatsu Honda is tough. Really tough. He beats me down several times. It is extremely painful. Please provide me with your sympathies.

Waifu Wednesday: Michiru Matsushima – My Grisaia Complete Box finally arrived this week, so I was in the mood to talk about one of Grisaia’s heroines. So let’s take a closer look at Michiru!

Some Gaming YouTubers Worth Your TimeLike to watch? Exhausted all my videos? Then check out these fine folks and have a great time; they’re all people I either really enjoy the content of or have been kind enough to support my work. Or both!

New Game Plus: Replicating Ancient Tool – Rorona’s building up a fine head of steam in our second playthrough of Atelier Rorona DX. Turns out just a few of those carry-overs from first time around make the early assignments much easier!

428: Shibuya Scramble – In Search of the Truth – How many visual novels do you know with a “postgame”? 428: Shibuya Scramble has a ton of hidden content for you to track down and enjoy — and some of it is rather surprising!

Atari A to Z

This week on the retro platter we have a simple but enjoyable and unconventional 3D arcade racer on Atari 8-bit, a beloved early title from Sierra’s Al Lowe on Atari ST, and a fiddly, twitchy lesson in trimetric projection from the Flashback collection.

Don’t forget you can find a full, indexed, searchable archive of all the Atari A to Z videos on its own dedicated site. Click here!

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

As always, I’d like to take a moment to note that I’m a Patron of Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose, the Cheap Show podcast and The Game Chasers, because all of them put out great content that is worth your support. The Game Chasers are working on a movie, too; be sure to check out their Kickstarter if you’re a fan.

Check out some examples of what these fine folks have been up to here:

And always, let’s have a quick spin around the waters of WordPress and see what’s been in my Likes this week:

Twitch, the Road to Affiliate, and Losing Myself in the Chase for Numbers (In Third Person) – Jett posts a thought-provoking piece about how it’s all very well and good to try and get yourself and your work noticed, but getting lost in never-ending attempts to drive those numbers up can cause you to lose sight of your original goals.

In Honor of “Free Solo” (This is my place.) – This post is somewhat outside the wheelhouse of what we usually cover here, but I have to give eternal respect to anyone who is willing to climb a rock face without any clothes on. Check out Fred’s post to find out more.

Languages That I Know and Why I Know/Study Them (The Kitten Who Eats Ramen) – The Kitten Who Eats Ramen speaks several languages, and I found this post on the reasoning behind that fact rather interesting. And a little humbling!

Don’t forget the PSP! (Kimimi the Game-Eating She-Monster) – You will hopefully recognise Kimimi’s blog by now as being the home of some excellently insightful retro game musings, and in this piece she makes a passionate exhortation for us not to forget Sony’s underappreciated handheld. No, not the Vita, the other one. Although you shouldn’t forget the Vita either.

A Message to Sony Regarding Spider-Verse (Lumi Reviews Things) – Lumi has Thoughts on Into the Spider-Verse and its Blu-ray release. I haven’t seen the movie, but I can imagine he’s not going to be the only one feeling this way!

And that’s that for another week. I’ve got a podcast to finish editing and then… I don’t really know! I’m hoping this week actually has a bit more time to sit down and play games in!

As always, thanks for your support, and see you around in the week!
