Some Gaming YouTubers Worth Your Time

Hello, dear reader, and thank you, as ever, for continuing to support MoeGamer and my other projects with your generous, kind eyes — which, by the way, are looking beautiful this evening.

I’ll level with you, I have a busy evening ahead of me and nothing in particular planned to write about after a stressful couple of weeks in which I haven’t had nearly enough time to do everything I want… so in the interests of providing you with some sort of Content™ that you might find vaguely interesting, I thought I’d collect together some YouTubers I’ve been very much enjoying of late. Besides myself, I mean. Obviously my own channel is very good indeed and you should definitely go and subscribe. But what about other people, for when you get tired of my delightfully rich and fruity voice?

Join me beneath the fold and we’ll explore a bit… with a particular emphasis on slightly smaller, retro gaming-centric YouTubers that you may not have heard of, particularly if you’re in the States.

Digitiser2000

If you follow the weekly Around the Network posts, you’ll know I’m a Patron of Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose and his Digitiser project — and you may also remember I wrote about his major creative endeavour, Digitiser: The Show, a while back.

Well, Biffo and friends have been hard at work churning out more short-form content between the end of season one of Digitiser: The Show and the start of the next — and this short-form stuff has been really good!

Here’s a great example exploring Sir Clive “Spectrum” Sinclair’s forgotten inventions:

Octav1us

The words “attractive Northern woman plays retro games while wearing cat ears” will probably be sufficient to get a fair few of you to visit Octav1us’ channel, but on the off-chance it’s not: Octav1us really knows what she’s talking about when it comes to old electronic tat, crusty old personal computers and some of the very worst games the ZX Spectrum had to offer.

Her videos are smart, informative, funny and honest, and I really enjoy her work. I was delighted to see her involved with Digitiser: The Show, and I look forward to seeing her future projects.

In the meantime, check out what I feel is one of her best pieces of work: an in-depth documentary-style video on the ZX Spectrum.

hellfire64

Rob Caporetto really knows the Commodore 64 well… plus he’s also very familiar with many of its contemporaries such as the ZX Spectrum, the Amstrad CPC, the Vic-20, the Atari 8-bit and plenty of others besides. He’s also been kind enough to support my Atari A to Z work in particular with thoughtful comments and social shares.

Over the course of his videos, he’s explored a wide variety of games on many of these different platforms, often highlighting games that don’t tend to get talked about as much as some of the established “classics” people always bring up. He’s also recently changed his video format to be more “documentary-style”, and it’s going very well so far.

Here’s a cool video exploring the original home ports of some of the games in the recently released SNK Anniversary Collection for Switch and PS4:

Grumpy Retro Gamers

Chris and Ben the Grumpy Retro Gamers present more of a talk show than traditional “gaming” content on YouTube, but they do put out a selection of retro-themed Let’s Plays as well as their discussion videos. I’ll be the first to admit that their humour and style of delivery may be an acquired taste — particularly if you’re not a Brit — but the pair of them remind me very much of some people I went to school with, and thus I was immediately on board with what they do.

Their most successful series in recent weeks has involved the pair trawling through the very depths of eBay in search of the most hilariously unreasonable asking prices for retro games and merchandise, and the results have been pretty shocking over the course of the last five videos they’ve spent doing this.

How much would you pay for a copy of Call of Duty 4 that has probably had someone’s cock resting on the back of it?

Puppy Gaming

Puppy Gaming has been good enough to comment pretty regularly on my channel, so I will absolutely give him a shout-out here. His content schedule may be… well, if not “non-existent” then certainly “when he feels like it”, but I’m yet to have a bad time watching one of his playthroughs.

He also runs an “ASMR” channel in which he makes excellent use of his incredibly deep voice to read a variety of content, ranging from fiction to a magazine about wood-turning. His “Let’s Read” of Cosmopolitan Magazine was pretty special.

Anyway, his Let’s Play of BBC Micro classic Granny’s Garden inspired me to seek out its sequel Dragon World, and we all saw how that went. Twice. So let’s go back to where it all began…

On that note, I have to bid you farewell for the evening, darling reader. I’ll be back tomorrow, all being well, with a report on what you can expect from 428: Shibuya Scramble after you’ve seen the credits roll for the first time… and Chris and I will be recording a podcast over the weekend. Please look forward to it.

Oh, and just as a reminder… I have a YouTube channel too! Please head on over and subscribe if you haven’t already…

  1. I don’t think I’ve heard of any of these people. :0 I need to remedy that. My partner watches a lot of YT gaming channels. I know that Game Grumps is their favourite and there is also this one guy who plays LOTS of The Binding of Isaac, so I hear those videos often. I’ll have to pass this list along to them as I think they’d enjoy them based on the info you’ve provided. 🙂 Thank you.

  2. I’m always looking for more to watch on my lunch break. I was a big fan of Retsupurae, the guys that used to riff on games MST3K-style (can’t recommend their takeoff on the weird puzzle game Darkseed 2 enough – watch it if you have five hours to spare) but it seems like they’ve quit making videos.
