Around the Network

Hello! It is cold. It even snowed this week, though sadly not enough to get off work. Boo and indeed hiss.

Plenty to talk about this week, however, and from next week we’ll be starting a brand new Cover Game feature on the subject of Spike Chunsoft’s sound novel 428: Shibuya Scramble. Please look forward to it!

In the meantime, hit the jump to see what you might have missed this week.

Sunday Driving: Sunset Fire – A racing-centric episode for the Split/Second contestants this week; it’s no reprieve from the explosive mayhem, however.

Taito Essentials: Volfied – Some retro goodness as I look at the sci-fi spiritual successor to Qix, giving the abstract line-drawing classic the Arkanoid treatment.

Delving Into Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition #1 – The first of a series of articles exploring the sprawling monstrosity that is Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch. If you wanted a game to last you all year and beyond… look no further.

Warriors Wednesday: Ina Bit of a Pickle – The Wu forces start to encounter a bit more in the way of fierce resistance, and Ina joins the fray for the first time.

Waifu Wednesday: Mimi Houllier von Schwarzlang – As we bid a fond farewell to the Atelier Cover Game feature, I pay tribute to one of its most delightful waifus.

What’s in the Box: Song of Memories – Encore Edition – The long-awaited visual novel Song of Memories is finally here, and my limited edition arrived. Here’s a look inside this bumper crop of goodies.

New Game Plus: Producing Sundries – I enjoyed covering the Atelier games so much I thought I’d play them all again for the New Game Plus series. We get underway with Atelier Rorona DX on Switch.

Delving Into Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown #3 – A look at how Ace Combat 7 straddles that fine line between arcade action and realistic simulation, particularly with regard to its controls.

Atari A to Z

This week we’ve got an unreleased prototype of an arcade port, an early adaptation of mahjong solitaire, and a simple but satisfying sports game from the arcades.

Don’t forget you can easily check back through the Atari A to Z archives on its own dedicated site here.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

As always, I’d like to take a moment to note that I’m a Patron of Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose, the Cheap Show podcast and The Game Chasers, because all of them put out great content that is worth your support. Check out some fine examples here. And watch out if Uncle Grumbly offers you any jam.

And as always, it’s time to share the love a bit with a trip around the WordPress community and my Likes from this week. Be sure to stop by the blogs of these lovely people, like their posts, leave a comment and be sure to complement their layout — these folks work hard on making a nice-looking site for you to enjoy!

Nidhogg II: Get Eaten, Win Game (Hundstrasse) – Hundstrasse outlines what’s new in the shiny new non-2600-style Nidhogg game. Quite a bit! But ultimately it’s still about trying desperately to get noshed off by a giant worm.

Anime 101 – The Trappings of a Trap (Lumi Reviews Things) – Lumi explores the “trap” phenomenon, and laments how it’s a subject that is so difficult to discuss these days due to sensitivity over language. He also explores some popular examples — and corrects a few misconceptions.

Anime Detox (I Drink and Watch Anime) – Irina’s post on the subject of how discussing complex social issues on short-form social media services such as Twitter doesn’t always go well is worth reading, both for its content and the excellent discussion in the comments section.

Evolution: Eternal Dungeons (Kimimi the Game-Eating She-Monster) – Kimimi explores Evolution, but not the one you’re probably thinking of for Dreamcast. Instead she takes on the Neo Geo Pocket Color version, which has its own unique charms.

Sarcasm (and the lack thereof) (One Man in Japan) – Duznot explores how there is no sarcasm in Japanese — and how Japanese people tend to avoid speaking their mind and joking around in the same utterances.

All right! All done. We’re wrapped up for another week. There’ll be a Sunday Driving post later today, and a brand new episode of The MoeGamer Podcast tomorrow. Thanks as always for your support, whether it’s simply by stopping by here to read something, sharing my stuff on social media or taking that extra step and supporting me on Patreon or Ko-Fi.

Have a lovely week! And wrap up warm…
