Around the Network

Welcome, one and all, to the regular (when I remember) weekly roundup of all things from around both my own creative projects, and the broader creative community.

I’ve had a few days off from the day job this week, so I’ve been able to get well ahead of schedule with upcoming videos. If you missed the announcement on YouTube, I’ve also taken the sad but necessary step of hitting “pause” on long, multi-episode playthroughs; while I do think the Final Fantasy Marathon is a noble goal, it was just burning me out, and I’m enjoying doing the one-shot variety stuff a lot more.

I’m already feeling the benefit that taking that particular weight off my mind has provided, though, and I’m not saying long-form playthroughs will never return — just not for now. Anyway, in the meantime, let’s catch up on what you might have missed in the last week or so.

My Time with Dee Dee, Vol. 4: First Look – Friend of the site Matt Sainsbury of DigitallyDownloaded.net was good enough to give me an exclusive early peek at his Marquis de Sade-inspired visual novel project. This looks set to be a challenging but rewarding read.

Magicami DX: Magical Girls Go Punk – Nutaku launches its new free-to-play game, which blends moe with punk and violent ’90s anime. I’ll be spending a bit more time with this one, for sure.

short;Play: Microsoft Flight Simulator – In the longest short;Play to date, I fly from my childhood home to my current home and tell you things you probably didn’t need to know about my Dad.

Waifu Wednesday: Tiffani Hildebrand – Let’s take a moment to celebrate The Mom of Arland, who is something of a dangerous drunkard if you happen to be a cute girl.

Midnight Resistance: Under Lock and Key – We continue exploring the Evercade’s astronomical launch lineup with a look at Data East’s charming Midnight Resistance.

Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland – Living the Arlandian Life – The Atelier MegaFeature continues with a look at Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland’s overall structure, and how this differs from the latter-era PS2 games.

This week we’ve got global thermonuclear war, winter sports and a nice round of miniature golf. All in a week’s work!

Don’t forget that over on Patreon I post a daily behind-the scenes personal blog that is, effectively, a resurrection of my old #oneaday blog I used to host over at angryjedi.wordpress.com. At the present time, this also includes exclusive patrons-only weekly vlogs and Let’s Plays at the weekends! If you’d like to get to know me a bit better, be sure to sign up; just $1 a month (about 80p) can get you in the club, and it also provides you with access to the MoeGamer Discord as well as helping to fund and support the things I do here on the site.

Cool Stuff By People Who Aren’t Me

First up, Patreon goodness! Right now, I’m supporting Paul “Mr Biffo” Rose’s creative endeavours on the Digitiser YouTube channel, the ever-grumpy (and always hilarious) Cheap Show Podcast, gaming and gaming culture commentator Liana Kerzner, independent games writing collective The Well-Red Mage, fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Rob “Hellfire64” Caporetto, alternative fountain of retro computer gaming knowledge Kim Justice, and blogger/YouTuber meggsngrits, all of whom you can find out a bit more about by clicking through to their profiles.

Here’s a selection of YouTube and podcast goodness from several of this lot:

And as always, let’s wrap up with some highlights from the WordPress community from the last week or so. As always, if you want to share some of your stuff with me, please do let me know if there are any posts you’re particularly pleased with and I’ll happily highlight them here!

Roundabout review (kresnik258gaming) – Kresnik takes a look at No Goblin’s unusual open-world, FMV-filled driving puzzle game.

Roxas: The Character That Defines Chris Durston (Normal Happenings) – The ambitious “The Characters That Define Us” project is still rolling along, and here’s a particularly interesting installment to spend some time reading.

Crusader Kings III: A First Look (Dating Sims on the Holodeck) – I do not understand the Crusader Kings series. Fortunately, TheRoyalFamily does, so check our their first thoughts on the latest installment in this beloved grand strategy series.

On the use of public office to suppress display and sale of artistic works (Everything is bad for you) – AK knows his law, what with him being a professional and all that. And this piece is an important read.

World building (Kimimi the Game-Eating She-Monster) – Kimimi dives into the Freescape-based 3D Construction Kit and comes out with some chunky masterpieces she’s very happy with.

That’s your lot for this week. I’m off to play Atelier Totori. Thank you, as always, for all your support!
